I'm sure you're probably aware of the pros and cons of these machines. You could play import games with no mod at all, just the swapping trick. This of course was reason enough to have one. The con was that 3/4 of the time, if not more, you'd be keeping your machine upside down in order to keep it remotely cool. Both the pro and the con were "cured" in later machines. There are still U52's and U58's that work, but few and far between.

Realistically speaking, I would expect there to be a "problem" with just about any launch unit, seeing as it's built from scratch, and bugs will always show up no matter what beta is done on it. This has been true for all of the gaming systems released, whether it be in Japan first or in America, it just doesn't seem to matter.
So true. This happened to my PSX as well as a friend's. It's inherent in new releases but at least the kinks get worked out.

The trick is, if you've got the first release of a console and a newer (more stable) version is released, you've got to be creative if you want to "swap" for the newer one.

Sorry should of thrown a comma in there I was being sarcastic I am one of the many that doesn't like Microsoft yet is such a hypocrit I use there products anyways. I am buying a Gamecube because it is cheaper, and there isn't three games on it that I can't buy on other systems. In fact the only game on there right now that I am remotely excited about is oddworld, and it's not enough for me to choose that system first over the Gamecube. Now I will eventually buy one because well I buy everything, and can eventually find a few games worth getting.

wow, sparked some discussion I guess.

again, wasn't trying to cause any undo panic, or flaming, or system wars, or anything else.

just wanted to let people know, and as mentioned several time. this was one system, and could very well be isolated.

yea, microsoft would never lie

actually I am pretty scared because while first-run systems having some problems is typical, it does seem to be happenning a little too frequently with the Xbox.

If you think about it though, the more complicated you make the gaming system (hard drive, etc- the more close you bring it to a PC) the more it is going to crash like a PC.

I was at Toys R Us today, and saw it in person for the first time. I know others have commented on it, but this thing is huge.

Anyway, to stay on topic, I don't know if I'm getting one (I only want it for Halo and the new Jet Set Radio game), but if I do I'll definitely buy it from a store that offers some type of warranty plan. I usually hate extended service plans, but it seems as if I've come across a lot of news with respect to crashing/defective X-Boxes. I'll be damned if my system conks out after 30 days and I have to send it to Microsoft to get it repaired or replaced.

I just came back from Toy 'R Us myself and checked out the XBox and Gamecube demos.

I wasn't too impressed with the XBox today as the only thing they had playing was NFL Fever 2002. No matter what I did the game stayed stuck at the initial loading screen. Well, I think it was stuck as I waited almost 2 minutes before I gave up. I never did see any in-game action.

The Gamecube faired a little better as I was atually able to play the new Waverace. It played fine, but it was just like the original Waverace, nothing too impressive.

I still think it is a little too early to be springing a lot of many into either of these consoles given the level of the games right now. Although I tend to be a little conservative anyway as only now am I looking into geting a PS2. The number and quality of games makes it look like an attractive option for those who don't already have one.

In case this hasn't been mentioned, I just looked at the Circuit City ad and it looks like they will be selling the XBox in bundles only on the 15th. Plus the console and controller you get 2 games, and extra controller, and a strategy guide, all for 439.97. I don't know if that's a good deal or not, but if I were buying one, I wouldn't want to be forced to buy a bundle.

It was mentioned about that a solution to this problem is to "buy a 10 dollar best buy warranty"

well, that'd all be well and good, except that the 10 dollar warranties are only for items 100 dollars or less
for a 300 dollar machine, i believe the warranty is about 35 or so...

Btw, I was at my local Target yesterday, and the Xbox crashed in front of my eyes. Then they came and "fixed" it, and a few minutes later it crashed once again!!!

Of course, i was playing right beside it on the gamecube, having loads of fun.

if you figure 50 clams for each game and 40 bucks for an extra controller that is like getting a strategy guide for free. I'm surprised CC marketing didn't pick it up and exponentiate on it.

maybe it has something to do with the XBOX being made in mexico.

that is one thing that a cartridge system has over disc is reliability. no moving parts, much less to go haywire.

You mean, you've never had to do that violent blow of air out of your mouth in an attempt to clean out any dust on the contact terminals of your NES cartridges?

true, but that has more to do with the connectors being dirty than the actual game SYSTEM crapping out.
