How much longer for the N64??

I was thinking of getting an N64 for my nephew. At 8 years old I still think he's a bit too young to take care of a CD/DVD based game system(especially with a 4 year old little sister around).

My main concern is availability of games for the next couple of years. Games are still coming out for the PS even though the PS2 has been out for a year. Will this be the case with the N64/GC?

What about a gameboy advance - it's cartridge based. When the kid gets a little older buy him one of the cd/dvd systems.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there are any new titles being planned for the N64. Many of those that were are now being ported to the Gamecube (Eternal Darkness, Dinosaur Planet). In 12 days, the system will be officially dead.

I think part of the reason for that is because the PS2 is backwards compatible.

I don't think many games will be coming out for the N64 once the Gamecube comes out.

I just purchased my own N64 a couple of weeks ago. At home, my family had one. (I'm in college), and my In-Law's had one too. The best thing about the N64 right now is that everything is getting sold off dirt cheap, I got mine during the amazon Pikachu set sale for about $40. I'd recommend buying your nephew one cheap, then loading up on games for him to play. At 8 years old, he won't be able to enjoy a cd/dvd system, and if you pick up some of the great games at slashed prices, it'll make you happy too. This week at KB, Perfect Dark is only 9.99. It might be a little old for him, but I'm sure that you'll need something to play when you get bored at his house. Pick up some Pikachu-all kids like that, a couple of sports games, and your nephew will love you for it.

Well, I thought about a GB Advance, but like I'm worried about the durability of it, I'm sure it will get knocked around quite a bit, plus his sister like to play games also(I got him a Genesis to play with and if they abuse those cartridges take is any indicator, a GB Advance has little chance of survival).

I know new releases won't be coming anymore, I was just wondering how long Nintendo will continue to manufacture cartridges for it. I mean, up until a month or so ago I was able to go and buy new Genesis carts at Toys R Us.

New releases for N64

There are actually a few new releases coming soon for the N64: Powerpuff Girls: Chemical Xtraction, Razor Freestyle Scooter (Blockbuster Video Exclusive) and NFL Blitz: Special Edition (Blockbuster Video Exclusive).

Of course, none of these are what anyone would consider A titles, but they're new none the less.

Beyond that, the N64 will be supported by retail stores as long as people are buying them, just like any old console.

There's still a SNES and Genesis section at my local Toys R Us.

Yep I see carts everywhere, I even occasionally find a Genesis cart I dont have. Youll be able to find N64 carts for a long time. Ive noticed Blockbuster starting to sell off some of their rental titles too, you can get a ton of games dirt cheap. I saw Turok3 for six bucks and thats still a great game even if the graphics look a little dated.

But $6?!?!?!?

The end came awhile ago for N64, however it still lives and has some of the greatest games ever. In fact, last weekend my brother came down from New York and we invited some friends over, I rented Mario Party 3 (which I previously didn't get a chance to play) and we had a blast playing that and Smash Bros. There are tons of cool games, but most everyone here summed it up, don't count on anything new.

There is not much more coming out for the N64, but there are lots of kids games available now that can be had for not too much. The Gameboy Advance does not sound like a bad idea either, if you are considering future purchases.

Well, I am of the opinion that a good game
is a good game, regardless of whether it
is old or new. Just like you wouldn't judge
the value of music (or most wouldn't at least)
by whether it is old or new, so should games
not be judged by their age but by how well
they play.

With this said, I think the N64 has some
of the best games ever created, so therefore,
yes it is definitely worth getting one.
Especially since the games can be had
so cheap lately--I recently got Perfect Dark
and Excitebike64 at BB for $6.99 each!

I've said it before, but I think the
hype that fuels the videogame industry
will be its undoing. Don't believe the hype!

What you have to lose you can find it cheap and even if they no longer make new ones always go to ebay and find something for 5 bucks.

Word! Turok3 is a great game but when you pick it for $6 its even sweeter.

Well I decided that he was still a little young (8 yrs) to take really good care of a GBA and got him and N64 and a copy of Hey You Pikachu! (along wiht an RF adaptor).

What other games are fun but not too hard for an 8 yr old?

My friends kid is 5 years old and he LOVES Battle Tanx, the original. I dont know if BattleTanx Global Assault has too much stuff flying around or what but he prefers the original. We can leave him in that room all night and he wont make a peep. We have to pry the controller out of his hands when its time to go.

Its multiplayer so his sister can play at the same time, no fighting or taking turns. Smash Bros would probally go over pretty well too.

2 reasons to buy an N64: Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64!! No matter how good the gamecube will be (and it will be great) I will always keep my 64 for those titles.

My sister is 6 and she loves to play these two games. I'm sure an 8 year old would have no problem with these
