Thoughts on Dark Age of Camelot?

I don't play anymore, but I am wondering what those who bought the game think? I think that DAOC will go far in the online game realm for the simple reason that when they released their product, it was *gasp* working great. Even late in the beta it had very few problems and the game was starting to develop nicely. The game is lacking content, but they balance that by making it stable and bug free so that the people who do start to play will have a chance to get used to the game before things are added. This was the first MMORPG that I have seen which actually released a playable game and it might mean that from now on, companies will try to follow DAOC's example and release working products (unlike WWII online and Anarchy Online). 100,000 copies of the game (all that were made) were sold when the game was released and they will easily sell more.

So if you're looking for an online game and don't like those that are out and can't stand ones like Anarchy Online which are just awful and hardly work, check out Dark Age of Camelot, it's based on a fantasy world and has some great ideas...

To those who actually bought it, what do you think at this point? I'm just curious for opinions since in the beta, most of the people were loving it.

I played Beta 4 for a coupla weeks. Boring!!!!

Not as bad as Jumpgate (good gravy that was horrible), but still too dull. Movement was slow, there were only a couple different animals I could kill at any given level to have a decent chance at gaining experience. Those animals were tough to find even near the town. I couldn't do any exploring (ie. AC because I was so slow and every creature outside a certain radius from town spelled certain death). Personally, the graphics might be marginally better than Asheron's Call, but the game is too dang dull. There was so much more to do and see in AC even as a n00b.

I am looking forward to Mimesis Online though. Looking really good. www.mimesisonline.com

Well, after getting completely bored with Civilization 3 after about 15 games, I am going to take the plunge and pick up DAoC. I too played Asheron's Call for a couple of years and look forward to something new.

Any other thoughts about DAoC?

I played DAoC for about 2 weeks after retail and quit. It was just too tedious and didn't offer up much fun. RvR is its main attraction, but its very unbalanced and dominated by high-level chars (as it should be), but its just too much "work" to get high enough level to really have any fun. Overall it just seemed like a lot of work with very little payoff.

I am very happy there.

Perhaps there is a lack of content at higher levels but my highest character is level 15 and I have more quests in my list and a task to perform than I have time for.

It is easy to become bored with anything if it is overdone. I plan to play for a long time and have recently canceled both of my AC accounts.

I've been playing Everquest for a little over a year, and finally quit playing it for this. I feel that every way EQ has failed, DAoC excels. Tradeskills aren't tedious and non-profitable like EQ. You don't have to worry about people camping certain monsters for their loot. I feel the game is more interesting than EQ and looks good for a MMORPG without being too laggy.

HUH??? Are you playing the same game as I was??? Sitting in the same spot pushing a button and waiting for 10 seconds - 1 minute per attempt (depending on the level of the item you are making) without being able to move in hopes that you won't fail and have to sit there another 10 seconds - 1 minute for another attempt. And then running around the city looking for the npc to deliver it to just to get your $ back plus a few extra coins, only to repeat the same scenario 300+ times. Thats not tedious?

Can you explain this?
Is this during combat you have to wait 1 minute between each attack?

Not for combat, I was talking about doing tradeskills. At low levels it only takes a couple seconds to make an item. At higher levels it can take a minute (probably more as you go up) per item. Not all attempts are successful either, so sometimes you wait a minute and it ends up not working so you have to try again. The main problem is during that time you can't move or else it will automatically stop your attempt to make the item. Some tradeskills are worse than others, like weaponmaking, if you want to make a sword you make the hilt, then the blade, then put the 2 together, for a very long wait time till the item is completed.

Your skill only increases if you are successful, and even then it doesn't go up every single time (the harder the item the better chance of going up in skill, but the bigger chance you have of failing and ruining materials). You can get up to about 100 tradeskill with just making and selling right back to the shop. After 100 things start getting a bit pricier to make (materials cost more). You can realistically get to about 200 by just buying materials/selling to the shop/taking a loss. After 200 it gets prohibitively expensive to keep doing that unless you have wicked funds (high level) or using guild money to fund your tradeskills. So at that point you have to take on consignments, which are tasks to make an item and deliver it to someone in the city. This is the most mind-numbing excersize in tedium I can think of. Fortunately you get more money back than you invested in the item so its a small source of income, but unless your idea of fun is continually running around a city and giving stuff to people (aka Ulf the delivery boy) it gets old very fast. Unfortunately at the present time you can only take on 1 task at a time, it would be nice to just get 10 tasks, make a load of stuff and deliver them all in one run instead of having to return to your trainer after each one for the next task. At 500 tradeskill you can no longer to consignments so you have to start selling to other players. Stuff costs a fortune to make and then you have to find someone to sell it to. Very few people were out of the 500s by the time I stopped playing.
