What should I buy for the PS2 I am getting?

I am getting a PS2 this tuesday. I was going to get it a couple of weeks back when the manager at Best Buy refused to let me use a 10% off anything coupon on a PS2. well Best Buy corporate told me he was wrong and told him to give me the 10% off .

I have a friend who is going to give me GT3 and an 8 MB memory card(I hope ).

so what else do I need. since I am going to retire my bedroom dvdplayer I guess i will pick up a sony dvd remote.

do I need anything else that I might be missing?

A Dreamcast to play while you wait for Metal Gear Solid 2.

I would not retire your DVD Player. The PS2's DVD performance is not the greatest. I would never replace my DVD player with that.

Why not get the GT3 pack for $329.99? It's great if your friend is giving you GT3 for free, but why not just get the package deal?

As for games, depending on what kind of genre you like we have...

Action:
Devil May Cry (coming out Oct. 17th)
Onimusha

Sports:
SSX
Madden 2002
NBA Street
NCAA 2002

Adventure:
Silent HIll 2
ICO

Racing:
Spy Hunter

Those are just a few, I'm not at home so I can't look at my own collection

My main dvd player is very good a toshiba 3109. however my second player sucks. it is a GE 1105 and it has problems playing all dual layer discs. The PS2 will be an improvement. My third player was better but I gave it to my mother so she would have a Dvd player.

I have an S video cable I believe however if not i will get one.

I will keep the games in mind. feel free to let me know If I will need anything else.

Do I need a second memory card??

If you're into sports games a second memory card would be a good idea. The franchise modes on those games take a lot of space on a memory card. I have 3 cards so far...1 for Madden, 1 for NCAA and 1 for every other game.

NCAA Football 2002 is definitely one you should get. Also get either Silent Hill 2 or ICO.

Good idea. I find multiple memory cards to be very helpful if you want to run more than one simulation at the same time. I frequently do that for GT3. Use one card for testing, and one card for scoring. And cards are relatively cheap.

These are must own PS2 titles:
Twisted Metal Black
NBA Street
Silent Hill 2

Must own upcoming games:
SSX Tricky
Devil May Cry
MGS 2

The following are "must rent" games. (I consider them great games, but too short to be worth $50)
ICO
Onimusha
Z.O.E

I would highly recommend Grand Theft Auto 3 (which comes out at the end of the month). From the articles I've read it is gonna be great. It's the cover story of the newest Official Playstation Magazine- supposed to be very open ended gameplay. Here's a link to some of the movies-

Defenitely ICO... I enjoyed Summoner too, the hours you spend playing that will make up for ICO's brevity.

You defenitely need a second memory card if you plan on getting the vastly superior Sony remote. It takes up a good chunk of one of your cards from what a friend has told me.

If you're really into DVD though, I wouldn't look into the PS2 as a replacement for a real player. Even the cheapest players I've seen have performed better.

gcribbs, I strongly recommend the PS2 Sony Remote Commander. It's compact, sweet looking and only $19.99.

Red Faction is fantastic if you're into mission-oriented shooters. At least until Metal Gear comes along.

Onimusha is good, but NOT worth the $50 (Personally, I'm still waiting for that sucker's price to come down so I can add it to my library already!). I suggest Silent Hill 2 for the time being. There are going to be a ton of great games coming by this holiday season. I also recommend at least an S-Video cable and (duh) an extra controller(s).

I totally agree with CreatureX.

Twisted Metal Black is AWESOME but if you want something a little more lighthearted, get Rumble Racing.

Ico/Onimusha/Silent Hill 2 are extremely short but GREAT games!! I finished them each in two weekends. At least with SH2 you can replay with different weapons and endings.

For just a totally fun Game I recommend Rayman. Lot's of fun and filled my Sonic/Crash Bandicoot fix until Crash comes out for the PS2 later in November.

Devil May Cry/Metal Gear Solid 2/SSX Tricky are definite MUST gets coming over the horizon. I would add Spy Hunter (which I think is already out) and Grand Theft Auto 3.

Also, don't forget that youcan play ps1 games as well! There are a lot of good games out there that are coming down in price (Spyro, Crash, Final Fantasy,etc...)

Have fun!
