Civilization 3 has Gone Gold
It's been a long day for me here at work and this was actually announced yesterday, not today. Civilization 3 has Gone Gold (i.e. gone to manufacturers for pressing) and will be shipping on Oct. 30th. There will be 2 versions of this game, a regular one and a Limited Edition version for $10 more. Go to a site like EB to see the differences.
Anyone else excited by this besides me? I know there was a Civ 3 thread a while ago, thought I would fire up the excitement again.

Thanks for the heads up, anyone play Civ I or II? I've heard those are really addicting, more possibly than say, Starcraft. I have not played any of them so I was wondering. What kind of game exactly are they? RTS?

I own and played both Civ I and II. They are both very addictive. The StarCraft type of Strategy game and the Civilization type of Strategy games are really on the polar ends of each other.
Civilization is a lot like Age of Empires if you've ever played that, or any of the Caesar series. You build buildings, Wonders of the World, put resources toward new technology, increase food and supplies, keep citizens happy, etc. With new technology you get new weapons and buildings, with Wonders you get points over the other civilizations. You also fight other civilizations in your attempt to take over the world.
I love both Civ and StarCraft, but they are two different beasts of the same genre. One is more a macromanagement game while the other is an RTS. Civ is played over chronological time (from BC all the way to present day and into the future) and really isn't an RTS in the normal sense. I hope this small explaination has helped you in understanding what Civilization is. If not, I know places like Best Buy sell Civ I and II together for $9.99...I just saw it today in the Bargain section. Go and try them

Civilization = Electronic Crack.
Civilization is quite possible the most addicting game I have ever played. I could play it for 5 or 6 hours straight, and usually have no concept of time, thanks to the "One More Turn..." syndrome.
Civilization and other games of its ilk are turn based empire games. You found cities, research technologies, develop an economy and military, and basically set out to become the best empire in the world, whether thorugh conquest, science, diplomacy or (in Civ III) culture. Sounds simple, but it's like chess - an hour to learn, a lifetime to master.
Sadly, I don't have the cash to spare for Civ III right now
. Anyway, I'm playing Call to Power II and Alpha Centauri simultaneously right now, so I suppose I can keep myself occupied till a price drop

. Alpha Centauri is well worth it though being a Sid Meier game and all.I can almost guarantee that week of or week after release that Best Buy will have the regular version at el cheapo prices. I'm talking low $30s here, since the game is $49.99 regularily. If it goes into the $20s, it's a REALLY great deal. Save up and buy!

Call to Power II does heartily suck out of the box, but the mod community for the game is pretty expansive. They've corrected most of the deficiencies present in the original games, and have added in a bevy of new and interesting features. Yes, Call to Power II (modded) has features that even rival or surpass Civ II

I never played Call to Power II because Call to Power was such a ripoff, and a lower class ripoff at that. I meant it all in jest anyway
. I'll have to look up about the mods and decide whether to buy Call to Power II or not. Thanks for the info, any link you could give me about the mods?

Though I'm not sure if I would actually buy CTP II now; I have no doubt Civ III will be far, far superior in every way

Alpha Centauri does rock the house, though. Frickin' mind worms.

Just make sure you don't play a Civ game during midterms and finals..... You'll never get around to studying. You'll just play Civ for like an "hour" when in reality, a day has passed. Heh heh
I think Alpha Centauri was "on sale" at Fry's for $8. Probably the going price for it now though. Not sure though.

I can't wait. I'm not sure if I'll preorder or go for the Limited Edition. I don't think the differences justify the extra $10. The actual GAME is going to rock, and that's all that matters. BTW, Call To Power was complete and utter crap. I couldn't stand it. I much preferred Civ II and Alpha Centauri to CTP.

I agree with your statement about it not being worth it. Behind the Scenes, Meier's induction into the Hall and a fold out tech tree (although this is cool, they don't say what kind of tech tree the regular version will have) just don't excite me too much.
FYI, Civ3 has no multi-player support as of yet. They are supposedly working on it, but for the game to get out before the end of the year they had to put MP on the back burner supposedly.

I've pre-ordered thru Amazon, but I'm thinking of cancelling so I can pick it up on Tuesday along with the new DVD releases...
Anyway, I'm excited that I'll finally have this in my hand before next weekend... I guess I'd better stock up on Mountain Dew...

i just have to say that Rollo's described "one more turn" syndrome is indeed not a syndrome but a chronicled affliction. it has been documented throughout the entire country as lonely girlfriends, boyfriends, husbands, wives, friends, enemies, and children have called in to hospitals and police stations to report incidents of the aforementioned affliction.

anyway, i, for one, am ultra-hyped.. however, having just gradiated from college, i have to contemplate whether or not i'll be able to successfully find a job with this game in my household..
hmmm... maybe i'll pass on it for awhile..
heh heh..
naw. it sounds too cool.
amazon has one customer review (the second one) that pretty much describes the differences between II and III.. holy good grief, does it sound spectacular.. sheesh. i don't know who it was that said that they could play for 5 or 6 hours.. but i can play for almost 24 hours.. of course, i emerge looking like a zombie and feeling like shhhhii.... those are the times where i don't play again for a few days afterward..
this is addiction, indeed.

just thought ya'll might like to know..
i just called up the local Best Buy (on Pico in Los Angeles)..
they said that Civ III will be on the shelves on the 31st (meaning that you won't be able to buy it on tuesday) and also that it will cost $60. of course, maybe the guy i talked to had his head up his... but that is the information as i believe it..
i think i'll try calling fry's.
in the meantime, if ya'll haven't read about Civ III yet, i'm just reading about it right now over at ign:
http://pc.ign.com/previews/12062.html
holy shiz!
i'll edit this post with fry's and circuit city's responses to my price inquiry as soon as i disconnect and reconnect! (and finish reading the ign stuff
-di doctor-
EDITED TO ADD:
well, the results are in.. looks like fry's and circuit sh.. city both did not know what price they will have on it. i'm betting that amazon is the way i'm going as the more and more i researched this game, the more and more i want to play it NOW! RIGHT NOW!
anyway, happy halloween, ya'll!

Here's Gamespot's price search for Civ 3... Amazon's at 44.99... There are a few cheaper places both in Canada and US, but none I've dealt with before, and I want it fast...
