Metal Gear Solid 2 may be delayed.........

or even cancelled here in the West!!!!! :( :(

http://www.fgnonline.com/playstation2/news/19933.html

PlayStation 2: Konami has issued a statement regarding the development of the highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 2 title.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty focuses on, among other topics, terrorists in New York City. Speculation has arisen suggesting that Kojima's masterpiece would either be delayed or cancelled in the West due to this week's events.

An official statement from Konami Computer Entertainment Japan said, "We do not know what effects there will be upon Metal Gear Solid 2 at this moment. We are currently collecting and analyzing information regarding this matter and would like to express our condolences to the victims of the tragedy."

As soon as further information is made available, we'll let you know.

I would highly doubt a cancellation as well. I do believe that they may delay the title until early next year. That would majorly blow ass. :(

I don't plan on getting a ps2, but this news does suck. I understand the issue is respect for victims, but we can't start censoring everything that has a plot that deals with terrorism. We can't give up our freedoms because of this attack.

Flay 09-14-01 12:05 PM

They want to cancel a game that isn't released for 2 months? America will have moved on by then. That's just silly.

RudeBoie 09-14-01 12:09 PM

I doubt any thing will happen. Every company has to do their standard PC public relations release. At most, they might delay the game by a month until November's start of the holiday season. And besides, Snake is a hero, it's not like GTA3 where the purpose is to kill people and cause havoc.

IC_Freeze 09-14-01 12:26 PM

according to rumours out there, there's a good chance of this one getting cancelled.

Flay 09-14-01 01:18 PM

It ships on 11/13/01. Isn't that enough?

Awww crap!! :( MGS2 was the reason I bought a PS2(that and FFX). I understand Konami's feelings though, anyone who has played the demo knows the game deals strongly with terrorists and is based in New York.

I understand some major movies have also been pushed back also. Its still around 2 months until MGS2 comes out, and I think by then most people will have (hopefully) gotten over the incident and moved on with their lives, there's a time to feel sorrow but we can't grieve forever, that'll only weaken our countries esteem for being free-thinking.

Besides, Snake fights terrorists in MGS!! Hopefully at the worst Konami will delay the title a few weeks rather than cancel their biggest title in the west. Otherwise I may have to get a japanese playstation to play this game.

darkside 09-14-01 01:23 PM

If it does get cancelled its the stupidiest thing ever. You are stopping terrorists in the game. Must we let these maniacs win at every turn. Every thing that gets cancelled or pulled from TV is just another victory for the terrorists.

AgtFox 09-14-01 01:24 PM

I doubt it would be cancelled. Too much money to be gotten by this game. If it is cancelled I will probably quit playing video games entirely because it is just silly to even think about cancelling this game.

I implore all of you to write a letter to Konami saying you want MGS2 out on the correct day and not to be censored in regards to terrorism and everything else. You do actually have to write a note though, as they have no e-mail address specifically for this purpose. Here is the address:

Konami of America, Inc.
1400 Bridge Parkway, Suite 101
Redwood City, California, 94065-1567

Here is the Japanese mailing address if you wish it to go there (at least I think this is the address):

KONAMI CORPORATION 3-1, Toranomon 4-chome
Minato-ku, Tokyo 105-6021
Japan

The game was still 2 months off when the tragedy happened, they should not put this game on the back burner. Also, tell them to forward the mail to Japan if need be.

Snake is American, MGS's storylines have always involved America. Whether this game is about terrorism or not should not matter because we all know in the end that Snake wins. Snake is patriotic and will beat the terrorists back for his country. We should stand united and not divided over this. We need MGS2 to come out on time and with no censoring. It will show the entertainment industry is not scared of terrorism or exposing an obvious threat in today's world. I think I've said enough, please write to Konami and let them know you want this game.

Or go to the Konami MGS2 message board and post your thoughts :

They have staff looking at posts/questions there.

Thanks dek...I already sent my message.

RJainMJ 09-14-01 02:05 PM

Cancelled ... ?!? No, thats muuuuuch too far. That's just ridiculous. This is THE MOST anticipated game for a long time now on ANY console. They can't just cancel it for a basically unrelated event and they won't. The game's release isn't until the November weekend after Thanksgiving. That's definitely enough time to release this.

AgtFox 09-14-01 02:10 PM

The release is November 13, 2001 last I checked...that is well before Thansgiving. They want an advantage on sells before Thanksgiving. This is why it is coming out in the US before Japan.

PixyJunket 09-14-01 02:14 PM

Grow up.. this isn't about censorship, it's about respect to those involved in this tragedy. Releasing a game about terrorism so soon after thousands of people died because of terrorists is really bad publicity and bad taste. Hell.. I'm excited about this game just as much as anybody else, many people (with good reson) think this game is why the PS2 was made (seing as.. well.. um.. the system's selection so far has been..).

Something this big is going to take a helluva lot longer than 2 months to recover from.. and in the meantime.. things are gonna have be a little cool.

Again.. this is about respect, not about "fear" or "censorship". I'm sure this game will come.. and when it does, maybe the PS2 will be worth what it costs. Okay maybe half of that.. ;)

AgtFox 09-14-01 02:22 PM

Actually, if you want to get technical, it is about censorship. You see, a few weeks ago there was news that MGS2 may be censored for the US release. What said censoring was, no one knew. I am combining both the possible cancellation and censoring into one large group.

I do respect what has happened, but at some point things must be returned to normal along with us dealing with this tragedy. You're right, the effects will most likely be felt 2 months from now, but that is no reason to just cancel or delay a game.

Unfortunately, all entertainment is thrust into this PR game and have to make tough choices, I just think this is the wrong choice. If they cancel this, they might as well cancel all games whether they have anything to do with tragedy or not.

Sorry but if they cancel this game or edit it to not take place in NY and/or not involve terrorists it is clearly censorship. Sure it would be done out of respect, but it is censorship none the less. Delaying wouldn't be a big deal IMO, but it's really not necessary. The movies I can somewhat understand as everyone, including most of the victims families, would be subjected to trailers, tv spots, posters etc. However it is a minority of the population that plays video games. The average person doesn't know what MGS2 is much less that it involves terrorists in NY. Besides in this game the terrorists are the bad guys, it doesn't glorify terrorims. I would understand them pulling a game in which you played a terrorist.

I don't think you really understand. If Konami was FORCED to remove anything about NY and terrorists, that would be censorship.

If KONAMI decides to remove/change those elements, than that's just good judgement.

But in essence, they would be forced to do it out of fear of negative PR backlash. And it would be poor judgement, not good judgement. We shouldn't change our lives, or our entertainment, because of this attack. We shouldn't let the terrorists affect our society at all, that is their goal. Plus it would be stupid for konami to change anything. Metal Gear has always dealt with terrorist, they can't change it now. And too many people want it, and they'll make too much money off of it for them not to release it.

"Any publicity is good publicity"

I wasn't going to buy the game anyway.
But I think Konami should just alter the cityscape and change the supposed location (and title). (Tokyo maybe?)

Exactly, Konami should just release it as is. I won't be getting the game as I don't have or want a PS2 so I don't have a personal interest in the game. I just hate that terrorist are changing our lives. That is what the set out to do.

Keyser Soze 09-14-01 11:21 PM

Glad I can play both import and domestic PS2 titles I'll pick it up import if they mess with the domestic....

I don't think this should be censored though, it's just a game.

If you think that this title should be censored, or even cancelled... then what are your thoughts on Microsofts "Flight simulator" PC game?

In that game, you can fly a plane over the NY city skyline, turn the plane, and actually fly it into the WTC.

Thoughts?

Horrible....

gcribbs 09-15-01 01:26 AM

I am an American who is angry with what happened here. However I do believe this videogame that has the hero fighting terrorists should be released. I believe that canceling any title will only reward those terrorists that have attacked America. Why not donate a percentage of the profits to help victims of the horrible attack that way you still are able to release this great game and the victims are helped also.

Thank you.

this is what i posted and how i feel.
