Most popular violent games

I'm trying to assess the most widely played video game containing maximum violent content. Anyone have any opinion on which is the best violent video game out there for Dreamcast or Nintendo 64?

Your entire first person shooter genre are probably the most violent. James Bond was my favorite, it seems much more realistic than the more arcadish style of quake, or the likes.

I'm sure there are others, maybe somebody else can chime in as i'm more into racers and platformers, but for N64 you probably can't go wrong with Bond.

Yeah, 'Sword of the Beserk: Guts' Rage' (DC) is quite violent. It's pretty good too, it's based on a comic about Guts' and Casca; the story is advanced through FMV's, until you have to fight. I just can't get past the part where after you kill the king, the vines are trying to kill you and you have to run past all the vines.

Thanks for your input! If anyone thinks of any others, I'm all ears.
I am planning to use the most popular and most violent video game I can find in a research study in psychology so any info is welcomed.

Is this gonna be another study about how video games make people violent? I've been playing Doom, Doom II, Quake, and a lot of other violent games since I was 9 or 10 yrs. old; so far so good, I haven't been on any killing sprees so far. I'm now 17 and love the bloodiest, most action-packed games I can find, along with RPG's, and adventure games.

riiiiiiight. GoldenEye was extremely light compared to games that came out around the same time: Halflife, Q2, Kingpin, etc. It pales compared to virtually any shooter out now.

In terms of "most popular" violent video game, I'd say Mortal Kombat in it's iterations was probably pretty close if not the most popular violent game.

Uh, Half-Life and Kingpin were released years later than Goldeneye. Plus the original post asked for N64 and Dreamcast games.

Goldeneye released - Aug. 25, 1997

Quake 2 released - Dec. 9, 1997

Half-Life released - Nov. 19, 1998

Kingpin released - Jun. 16, 1999

I would also say UFC for Dreamcast since the fighting is very reality based. You hear bones and cartalage crunch when fighters are placed in submissions. Not to mention there is a lot of blood splattering.

Soldier of Fortune for the DC is another one, you can blow limbs clean off, and blow holes through peoples faces.

There was a game being developed for the N64 (however, they have switched their target platform to the upcoming GameCube) called Eternal Darkness. Supposed to have some incredibly scary and violent stuff. It's a resident evil-style game, but the game is designed around where the environment will change on the user at random to scare you and the more you get scared the closer you get to dying. Like you might be looking at a mirror and all of a sudden the mirror might start to "bleed". Scary **** like that.

Perfect Dark for N64 is definitely way violent. There's nothing like plowing through a room with a machine gun and running by an enemy so fast that they scream "Oh my god!", then you whip around and cap them in the leg and you see the blood go down their leg as they limp away and cry for you not to shoot. Then you put a bullet in their head and watch the blood splatter on the wall behind them and listen to the gurgle on their own blood.

The Turok games had some gross death scenes with lots of blood.

well Nintendo had this thing against violence.. so theres not many hard core blood fest games on that system.. hell look at MK1... they replaced the blood with sweat.. WEAK!!

as for violent games...

Not many people remember this one, but Robocop Vs. Terminator on Sega Genesis is in my books one violent game. hell you killed someone and they would pretty much fall into a puddle of blood.

other noticeable games..

Doom
Doom2
Final Doom
Wolfenstein
Mortal Kombat
Thrill Kill
Unreal (sniper shot.. hee hee)
Quake
Quake 2
Quake III
Half life is ok in voilence.. not to much compared to others
Counter Strike
resident evil series.. (hee hee, Desert eagle to the head!!!)

I would say the most violet, but most played game would be Metal gear solid. I don't know anyone that has a playstation and hasn't played MGS. An obvious example to it's popularity is all the hipe for Metal Gear solid 2. The first one would have been more gorrier if you could have used the ninjas sowrd but, I would say it is probly in the top 3 or 5 most violent and widley owned game. I'm sure though alot of you will disagree

This is really helpful, thanks again. I'm not doing any research to bring down video games, I actually just want to see if there is a difference in arousal levels between watching TV and playing VGs. Ultimately to measure the difference between observation and interaction. General theoretical stuff really. Does anyone think that I will have a problem finding the same number of guys and girls that know how to play these games at a decent level?

Definitely!! There aren't many girls that I know that play video games, much less violent ones. Most girls I've ever met don't play video games, it's mostly just guys. Your occasional girl player (no offence meant) can't compete at all with a guy, but then again, the ones I've played with haven't really been into it at all, they don't care about winning or losing, but that's just my experiences.
