Namco's Soul Burns for GameCube
The developer is set to bring its acclaimed fighting franchise to Nintendo's next-gen console.
August 17, 2001
IGNcube is finally able to confirm that Namco Entertainment will release Soul Calibur 2 for Nintendo GameCube. The company will make an announcement about the fighting franchise sequel at Nintendo's Space World pre-show press conference on August 23 in Tokyo, Japan.
The original Soul Calibur was released first for arcades and then massively updated and enhanced for Sega's Dreamcast console two years ago. The franchise quickly became a favorite amongst hardcore fighting fans due to its intricately detailed graphics and complex, varied play mechanics. Soul Calibur remains one of the only games to simultaneously receive a perfect score of 40 by Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu Weekly and a perfect 10 rating by IGN.
Earlier this year Namco representatives confirmed that a sequel to Soul Calibur, tentatively dubbed Soul Calibur: The Next Chapter was underway for arcades, but no specifics regarding console launches were released. Interestingly, the arcade version has long been rumored to be under development using Namco's System 246 hardware, an architecture based on Sony's PlayStation 2.
Details regarding the GameCube version of Soul Calibur 2 are nonexistent at this point, but insiders at Nintendo of America suggest that it is very early on. With that, Namco is likely only to release arcade media of the game in action during the pre-show announcement next week.
Regardless, the addition of Soul Calibur 2 to GameCube's library immediately propels the system as an attractive buy to fighting fans everywhere and disproves speculation that third-parties will avoid releasing 3D brawlers for the console based on its controller design.
IGNcube contacted Namco for comment, but the company did not return our calls in time for publish.
Ok now I dont know about the rest of you out there but i am now
