Classic 'Old' Computer Games
Just curious what classic computer games you can always go back to and play over and over again?
For me, it's: Civilization (the first one - looking forward to III in October) Colonization (another Sid Meier classic) Starcraft That's about it - obviously I like the turn-based/real-time role playing/strategy games. I just started playing Starcraft again and it's simply a great game - also nice since it runs smoothly on the old Pentium 350 sitting at my parent's house. Colonization wasn't one of the most famous Sid Meier games, but in my opinion, it was his best. It's freely downloadable at some gaming sites if you'd like to play it - fun to play, always offers new challenges, and you could even run it on a 386 if you have one. :) |
Civ is probably one of the best games to waste your day at. I tried playing Civ: Call to Power, but it just wasn't the same as the original.
I just checked out Civilization III, and I'll definitely be checking it out. |
Not sure I'd call them classics yet..
But starcraft is always a fun game to throw in to kill some time. If I could find them, I'd play my old text based games, Zork, again. |
Shouldn't this be in the video games forum?

I think I'm the only person who can't stand Starcraft. I've watched people play it online, and it's just how fast you can click accurately around the map. I generally don't like any rts that has "spells" you have to cast on other units. Makes combat a micromanagement chore.
Total Annihilation is worlds better. |

Well, I'm going to go back even further with my pick--M.U.L.E. Thanks to the world of emulation, I'm still playing it even today (and yes, I still have the actual C64 game out in my garage somewhere, covered in dirt, along with other originals like Airborne Rangers and Gunship). It's a game I enjoy so much, if I had to pick ONE game to take along with me to a deserted island for the rest of my life, that would be it.
I really, really wish this game would be updated for the next-gen consoles (as long as it kept that classic style of gameplay, and better yet, included the original game itself with maybe some updated graphics). Don't know if that'll ever happen, though. IIRC, I think the game's designer, Dan Bunten (who became "Dani" later), passed away, but I don't know if he (she) held the rights or if they were held by another entity. In any event, it's a wonderful game, as well as being one of the most educational games I've ever played. |
the old Dos game Rogue, wish I could find it now

Starcraft? Old? I thought this thread would be about games like Zork, Planetfall, Bards Tale, or any other old pc games.

Not even sure if i can get my old copy to play on my new computer since it was on 5.25" discs which i no longer have :( anyone know where I can download this since I do own it :) Eye of the beholder. a great classic roleplaying game. the best for a long time. |

Cant wait for warcraft 3! |

I forget which of my old games had this problem. it was a real time game and it moved so fast i lost before I made a move or two. I actually had to run a program to slow my cpu to run the game. frankly that game sucked anyway ;) |
I used to play all the old Sierra games, before they got weak...
SQ I-III, PQ 1-2, KQ1-4 (5 sucked big ass, 6 was alright) Gold Rush, Codename: Iceman, Hero's Quest (QFG1,2) If Sierra made it, I owned it. Those were the days. I swear when I first got KQ1 (distributed by IBM) for my PCJr, I was in heaven. Roberta/Ken Williams were like gods to my 8 year old self. I didn't think any company could compare to them. I also liked Beyond Zork... that first Text/Graphic merger although I could never get really far, only maybe halfway. Turning monsters stomachs inside out was so cool :) I was a god at F19 (F117a later) Stealth Fighter. I was a CMOH winner for all my flying. Never could get anywhere in that surgery simulator (forget what it was called) Some damn fine games back then, and I've only scratched the surface... Might and Magic 1-3, Xeen... Origin and its high requirement system needing games (Strike Commander, that WWII fighter sim, and of course Wing Commander) I just played and played... now that I've graduated college and have been working for some time I just don't have the time anymore to enjoy gaming the way it should be. Also the market is so inundated with crap that its hard to find the gems sometimes.... |

T.I.E. Fighter has great gameplay
|
yeah all the old Sierra games were classic
Liesure Suit Larry Police Quest Space Quest Freddy Pharkus Frontier Pharmacist |
Oregon Trail (damn I love shooting buffalo and deer).
|
Man, I loved Hero's Quest. Anyone remember Baba Yaga & the house with chicken's feet? I also thought it was so cool that you could import your character to HQII.
I also remember when Police Quest switched from an all-keyboard interface to an almost (possibly completely) all-mouse interface... I hated it! :) |
Hero's Quest ie. the Quest for Glory series was definitely awesome! Never played 2 or 5 though.
I remember when 6-7 years ago, it seemed like Sierra and LucasArts was untouchable Now they can do no right. I loved Sierra for the small company feel I always thought they had. Now.........they're just a big corp. I wish the Williams had never sold out Sierra: masters of the Quest games + LSL, and they had those Papyrus games LucasArts: X-Wing, Tie, and all the classic adventure games |
And who can forget:
Trinity Autoduel Phantasie III Starflight II A Mind Forever Voyaging Loom Impossible Mission 2 Populous And I'm appalled that no one mentioned Gabriel Knight. |
Originally posted by Grimfarrow And I'm appalled that no one mentioned Gabriel Knight. I take it that it is good? Also, did you really prefer Impossible Mission 2 over the first one? |
Originally posted by Goblincat Then you will probably be even more appalled that I have never played it. :) I take it that it is good? Also, did you really prefer Impossible Mission 2 over the first one? The rest of the series is also very good. I don't even know if Impossible Mission 1 existed. I played Impossible Mission 2 in 1987 on the Commodore 64. Ah, the good old days of classic gaming.... |
Leisure Suit Larry...awesome
Dr. J vs. Larry Bird Zorkon Civilization - Still the best out there.. |
