Looks like there will be no shortage of Gamecubes

from cube.ign.com

Lots of Cubes in 2001

Nintendo announces official figures on how mamy GCN consoles it will ship in Japan and in the US.

July 31, 2001

Nintendo today announced that would deliver an initial shipment of 500,000 units to retailers in Japan at system launch on September 14. The company plans to ship 1.4 million GCN units to the homeland by the end of the year.

Nintendo also stated that it would release 1.1 million GameCube units in the US in time for the holiday shopping season. The firm did not reveal how many consoles would be made available at US system launch November 5, but retail sources have indicated to IGNcube that the number could be as many as 800,000 pieces of hardware.

All in all, the publishing giant will have readied a total 2.5 million GCN units for Japan and US consumers in 2001 – not a bad start for its next-generation console.

But they'll all be purple. I want a silver one dammit. Oh well, guess I will have to wait a little while to play Rogue Squadron.

Who gives a sh!t what color it is? All I care about is that the games are fun to play. It's a game system, not a frickin' fashion accessory!

So Kenny will be all up on this one

I'd prefer a black one though.

That's great news. IGN also posted some new screenshots of Rogue Squadron. It looks pretty sweet, I'm going to try to pick one up when the time comes.

Though screens are amazing. Rogue Leader will definately be the first game I get. I loved Rogue Squadron on N64.

I do. Excuse me for giving a crap how my entertainment center looks. And I don't like being lied to.

NOA's VP of corporate affairs a month ago:
IGNcube: Will purple be the only GameCube launch color?
Perrin: No. We are looking at a variety of options.

Different Strokes for different folks I guess. My entertaiment system is for entertainment. I'm not materialistic and could care less what it looks like. IMO Gamecube looks to have the best game line-up, so I'll get one regardless of the color. If you want to miss out on great games because the system is purple, suit yourself.

It's not about being materialistic, to me its about my entertainment center. Purple against a wood entertainment center just clashes. I don't mind having my PS2, PS1, and DC out because they don't go and F up the whole room. I can hold off a few months until they get me a suitable color.

You guys are silly. You do realize that the purple one will likely be the only one put out by Nintendo. And that the silver one will be the Matsushita one that will play dvd's, cost a good bit more, and won't be out in the US until mid 2002-2003 right? Any way, different strokes for different folks. I really don't care what my entertaiment system, furniture, etc. look like as long as they serve their purpose.

Like you said, different strokes for different folks, I can wait. I don't want some ugly purple Gamecube altering the whole living room. Maybe I'll just spraypaint it

Nor red, they are marketed to the 7-13 year olds.

Black or Silver is good. Tan is ehhh.

The "purple only" comment was about the Japanese launch. They have not yet announced which color(s) will be available for the U.S. launch. I certainly am hoping they stick with their original plan of releasing in multiple colors (or at least make the default color more universal, such as black). But there's no sense in getting all upset until NOA has decided what they're going to do regarding the U.S. launch.

Yes, thank you for clearing up. Please people, read the news releases more carefully. It is unfortunate that the Japanese get all purple GCs, but I sincerely doubt that we will. If we did, I'd still be the first in line in my state, though.
Preference:
1. Gold (go great with future Zeldas!)
2. Black
3. Silver
4. Red
5. Purple

I think they made too many - do you think they will all sell? Is Nintendo a player anymore? Maybe I haven't been following GC enough, but it just seems like Nintendo disappeared - It didn't seem like the last console they made did very well in the end (good at first, but playstation dominated) - This is all conjecture though, so don't take it too seriously... also, those screenshots just make me think that the games are just gonna be the same games they've always had but with better graphics. [yawn] Just my $.02

They will sell. The N64's main problem was the cartridge format that scared off many third party developers. This basically forced Nintendo to rely on first and second party (Rare) games to be successful. Most of these games were great and sold like hot cakes, there simply wasn't enough good games released. However, with the Gamecube Nintendo has went with a small dvd format, and is going to get third party support. Every major developer (capcom, konami, sega, EA, etc.) is making games for it and it looks like all three of the next gen systems will have comparable third party support. This gives Nintendo a huge advantage IMO as their first party games (mario, zelda, metroid, etc.) will be exclusive to the system, and will be, IMO, better than any exclusives on the other systems. In addition Nintendo can be assured of Pokemon selling the system to younger gamers, and the $199 price tag will help a lot. There are also a good bit of mature games coming out for the older gamers. Lastly, the GC is getting a ton of hype in the gaming press, which will help sell more systems. The X-box had a lame showing and E3 and it's coverage has dropped dramatically, while the GC impressed and has been getting a ton of coverage ever since. Plus I would say that the success of the Gameboy Advance would show that Nintendo is still a "player."

Even with that many systems, there will be shortages....I guarantee it.

Black or silver definately. I don't think the lines will be like the PS2 though cause of the numbers available, but maybe there will be.

I am well aware that the news release was only for Japan. But why do you doubt that we'll get nothing but purple? They're all made in the same place, I see no reason why they'd give us multiple colors and short shrift their brethren. And even if other colors are available in Japan when the GC comes to America, that doesn't necessarily mean we'll get 'em at launch; look at the GBA and its milky pink. Anyway, I wrote an email to NOA in complaint, as I would advise the (few, perhaps) people who really care about the color to do the same.

Don't think of it as tan, think of it as "champagne"! Classy, eh? Now you can put it beside your la-dee-da entertainment system.

only a playstation fanboy could think the N64 wasn't a great system.
