American McGee's Alice for Mac

Anybody play American McGee's Alice for Mac that came out about a week ago. I hear it is awesome and yet very very scary. Just looking for opinions.

I wasn't all that impressed with the PC version. Thematically creative and visually appealing, but the gameplay was just standard run-shoot-jump. The level design was unnecessarily confusing, and led to having to constantly reload due to missed jumps.

I loved it for PC, but I wouldn't call it "scary". As far as an immersive environment, it was done very well. The game play was a bit flawed, with some problems with jumping (though no where near as bad as Castlevania 64), and some problems with very weak weapons and exceptionally hard enemies (boojums). The boojums were supposed to be passive, but if you messed with them, they were extremely powerful. Well, someone messed up and they were aggressive, not passive at all.

The end level was also a bit disappointing, because it didn't hold up to the richness or creativity of the other levels. The other levels had a theme, and there was a rhyme and reason for the characters you encounter. Not so in the last level, it was just "hard for the sake of being hard". Meaning that the enemy placement made no logical sense other than just being hard (dropping enemies out of the sky? from where? from what?), and that level design was made just to make it difficult to navigate. After a long, wonderful game it was a bit of a letdown.

However, overall, I loved the game and I'm not unhappy I bought it. It fascinated me for a week or so straight. I enjoyed the small touches in the early levels that really made it feel like Wonderland gone bad. Overall, a great story, with great graphics, but inconsistent game play (sometimes very fun, sometimes very frustrating) and a disappointing ending.

Well, I don't know about the PC copy but the Mac version was just released about a week ago and is built on the Quake 3 engine. The graphics are amazing particularly cause the requirements are insane. I think it is OS 8.1, 400 MHz G3, 128 MB Ram, 16MB ATI Rage or better, and more.

I think they added new AV stuff to it so that's why this version is said (to me by others) that it is scary. Oh well, I'll find out tonight.
