Nintendo is undercutting both Microsoft and Sony.
I'm tempted to get one at that price.

Well, this certainly makes things very interesting. At this point, I think I really have to shrug off the ho-hum showing of Xbox at E3--I guess a lot of games were very, very early and it showed. I also read something about the hardware they were running on not being 100% what the final Xbox will be.
However, the $100 price difference, a 3-day jump start on sales, and a very strong E3 showing are all things that are probably going to make Microsoft stand up and take notice of Nintendo's presence. I think Microsoft should have concentrated on a stronger E3 showing to generate buzz for Xbox that only would have built over the coming months. To tell you the truth, Gamecube was 3rd on my list (I don't own a PS2 at this time, so it was #2). Now it's vying for #1.
Very interesting news. I'm guessing MS will hold to their $299 price tag, and Sony will drop $50.

I'll definitely be getting one. Nothing tops Nintendo's first party games, plus they have Rare as an exclusive developer and will be getting games for Sega and EA. This will be the only next gen system I get. I simply don't have time anymore to keep up with all the games for one system, much less two or three. At this price Nintendo gets my business.

I also heard that the X-box froze, like a computer. I'm thinking Microsoft didn't quite grasp the concept of 'console' and not 'computer'. Seriously, their X-box seems to be more computer than console.

I guess sometime, somewhere I signed an agreement to buy every Nintendo console when they came out. Looks like things will be no different with the Gamecube.

I will be there on launch day, credit card in hand regardless of price, just like the DC. I have a soft spot for Sega and the big N.

WOW. I can only hope that this means Microsoft will cut the price of the Xbox to compete.
Anybody know what it costs Nintendo to make the Gamecube? Surely at $199, they've got to be taking a pretty good loss to try to gain market share.
Even at $299, Microsoft is losing money on the Xbox. Microsoft has deep pockets, so I seriously hope they make a price cut...
If it weren't for the Xbox, I'd have bought a PS2 already...
Competition is great.

Ah, it's great to be a teen. I'm one of the prime audiences for most of this stuff. After all, I'm the upcoming generation of the work force, and they're competing to get my attention and my money. Ah, it's great to be a teen.

Gamecube Launch Detailed
Gamecube: Nintendo lands competitive advantage over Microsoft by announcing that Gamecube will go on sale in the U.S. for just $199.
Hot on the heels of an impressive E3 showcase, Nintendo has revealed a $199 price point for Gamecube, which will go on sale in the U.S. on Nov. 5. Not only will Nintendo have a three day jump on Xbox, bit it will also have a $100 discount compared to Xbox and PlayStation although Sony is expected to announce a possible $50 price cut this fall.
"The response to Gamecube at E3 was phenomenal," said Peter Main, executive vice president, sales and marketing, NOA. "Game developers expressed over and over that our games are of unmatched quality, especially Luigi's Mansion, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II. Pikmin also spiked interest for its incredibly unique game content and approach. This is all very exciting."
Gamecube's U.S. launch will be backed up with six exclusive Nintendo titles, each retailing for an MSRP of $49.95. Other upcoming games include Disney's Animal Forest, Donkey Kong Racing, Eternal Darkness, Kameo: Elements of Power, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, Metroid Prime, NBA Courtside 2002, Raven Blade, Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet and Wave Race Blue Storm.
Information on shipment quantity will be made public as part of Nintendo's official financial announcement slated for May 24 in Japan. European details of the Gamecube launch are expected to be made this September at the firm's Euro show.

mljones99, when I was a little kid I got the Colecovision and I remember my mom making me turn it off and go to bed. I would always tell her "When I grow up I'm gonna get all the games and stay up all night and play until my eyes fall out"
And I do.

that is what i expected. i now expect sony to hit them between the eyes in july with a cut to not 249 but 199. at least this is what i think will happen. too bad nintendo can't play dvd's. this will hurt them if sony goes down to 199. although they might do ok at a 249 drop from sony.

I was going to skip the Game Cube and pick up the X Box and PS2(only reason, gotta have my Final Fantasy).
But for $199. I am now tempted to pick up a Game Cube and hold off on the X Box.
Does the Game Cube use cartridges again, or have Nintendo moved to CD/DVD rom based games?
If they are still cartridges, are the N64 games compatible like PS games are on the PS2?
