How did all the kids become friends?(where they already friends?)
Thanks

As far as I can tell, Eric, Hyde, and Kelso have always been friends. Fez is a foreign exchange student who never seems to have to go back. Eric and Donna have always lived next door to each other and nature took it's course.
I think Hyde lives with the Formans because his mom kicked him out or he just moved out. He tried to live with his dad once but that didn't work out.

Hyde's mother (played by Katey Sagal) ran off with a man leaving Hyde to fend for himself. (His father had abandoned them years before.) When Kitty saw the conditions he was living in, she insisted that Red take him in (even though Red was unemployed at the time).
A brief reference in one episode suggested that Eric and Kelso are the oldest friends in the group and that Hyde came along a few years later. Donna has lived next door for most, if not all, of Eric's life. Fez and Jackie are relative newcomers and are both a bit out of place in the group. Fez because he's foreign and Jackie because she's a year or two younger and her family is well-to-do.

Miser has it right.
When I first read about the show, I thought it was the single WORST concept for a sitcom ... turns out it's the best one going at the moment. There's not a lousy character and the shows are always funny, and strangely heart-warming at times.
Red is my favorite. Dumbass.

Officer: You Red Foreman's son?
Eric: Yes sir.
Officer: You poor bastard!
When I first heard of this show, too, I though it was the worst idea in TV history, but now is the show I look forward to the most.
