For you trekkers that might care.
"TV vet Scott Bakula is poised to boldly go where William Shatner and Patrick Stewart have gone before.
The "Star Trek" fan site trektoday.com reports that Bakula is in negotiations with makers of the upcoming fifth "Star Trek" series, to take the role of Jackson Archer.
Previously leaked casting sheets had described the character as having "a sense of wonder and excitement, as well as a little trepidation about the strange things he will encounter."
The site also said Archer has a chip on his shoulder over Vulcans, whom he blames for slowing down human progress. But his science officer will be a Vulcan, so the series will likely get some mileage out of his attempts to deal with his feelings.
"Although he has a strong sense of duty, he's a bit of a renegade - he's not afraid to question orders or even disobey them if he feels in his gut that he's right," the site quotes the casting sheet.
Bakula has appeared on "Quantum Leap," "Murphy Brown," the "Invaders" mini-series, as well as the gay next-door-neighbour in "American Beauty."
A formal announcement about the casting of the series is expected soon."

I wonder who will the "estranged" character in this show....
(Coz you had Spock, then Data, then Odo and then the holographic Doctor. So, you know, they have to have one!)
I wondered where Bakula ended up after that final leap....

Cool. He was pretty good in Lord of Illusions. I'm not his biggest fan, but he doesn't bug me either. I'm just glad they're going to run another ST series. I thought this was it and it was one of the few shows that get broadcast that I enjoy. I hope it's good, I'll be watching it.

i bet this is as bogus as the Anthony Micheal Hall and prequel show reports that were blurbed everywhere the past two weeks and then were quickly disproven. i'll believe it when i see it.
i'd personally prefer they go the fairly unknown route (like they have in the past). Someone like Bakula has too much sci fi baggage already. It would be like casting one of the Battlestar Gallactica guys, Mark Hamill, or, god forbid, Gil Gerard. Such casting is a bad idea; theres too much history with some actors, making it cumbersome to establish a new character.
