How do the Tivo and Replay TV units work? Do you have to subscribe to a service to use them or do you simply program them to record as you would with a VCR? Also, I'm interested in purchasing one or the other, but I'm not really sure what features are necessary, etc. (I'll probably only use it to record 10-15 hours per week) Any help would be appreciated.

Try tivo.com and the AVS Tivo Forum for ANY information you have about Tivo:

Here's a couple of recent threads from here:

For Tivo there is the choice of a $9.99 monthly subscribtion, a $99 yearly subscription or a $199 lifetime subscription. ReplayTV does not have a subscription service but you essentially pay for it when you buy the machine.
I own a Philips 30 hour Tivo and can't live without it!

replaytv rocks. I have one and love it.
mijang, remember that even if you record 10-15 hrs a week, you may want at least 30 hr capacity (in case you are ever out of town on vacation and want to archive a couple weeks of shows)...
I have a 30 hr and wish I had a 60... Never thought we would be recording so much stuff. But you can watch more tv in the same amount of time (zipping through commercials rocks)
