Simpsons--What State is Springfield In?

Of course, they always avoid telling us exactly what state Springfield is in, but they have ruled out a bunch of states. I just saw the Monorail episode, and Lenny and Carl talked about shipping nuclear waste to "one of those Southern states with the crooked governors.", so it would seem they're not in the south. I remember Homer not wanting to go to "Taxachusetts", so we can assume they're not in Mass. They seem to have a lot of snowy winters, so that would seem to rule out some states. Any others that have been eliminated?

They also have a desert wasteland, a gorge, and a few large mountains so it could be anywhere....but I think that they aren't located anywhere in particular, it's just a running joke.

There was the episode "Behind the Laughter" or something like that which was a spoof of VH1, and at the end of that it said a family from southwestern Missouri. This was the syndicated run of the show. I think it was some other state when it originally aired.

It's no where! They're just making a joke. In the Thomas Edison episode, when Homer and Bart are driving to the museum, you see a road sign saying that "New Jersey, Texas, Oregon, and Florida" are coming up. It's just a joke that you're all falling for.

All I know is that Springfield and Shelbyville have to be on an island (or else is entirely surrounded by gorge) because we know that Springfield blew up the "only bridge out of town" in the Comet episode. Also, we know Shelbyville is adjecent to Springfield because of the lemon tree war.

Perhaps the topic should be changed to "What state SHOULD Springfield be in?"
I remember one where they came to a fork in the road - one pointing toward Cleveland and one toward Cincinnati. I believe the bus turned around and went back. That would seem to eliminate Ohio.

Springfield isn't anywhere, but most of the people are named for streets and places in the Portland, OR area, where Groening grew up.

I was joking.
In the episode where they go to Itchy and Scratchy Land they go onto the "freeway to some other state."
Freeways, if I am not mistaken are usually a California/West Coast kind thing. We call them Thruways in New York. And in another epsiode where Homer wants to buy the Dallas Cowboys, they travel to the "East coast." I always thought that this narrowed it down until I saw an episode where the Simpsons were banned from almost every state. And the only one or two left were like South Dakota and another based in the middle of the country. Then while looking at my Virtual SpringField CD-Rom I noticed a letter addressed "Springfield, USA 4000?"
(I forget the last digit) but that would place Springfield in Kentucky as some have pointed out and since there is a Springfield, KY, I think I have to go with this answer. But then again, always remember what Bart said...
