Battlebots did get sean Salisbury a job at ESPN. I don't know if that's exactly good though :)

J-Dubya 09-28-02 06:06 AM

There were too many obstacles in the arena.

Precisely my thoughts. The only robots I would have enjoyed seeing fight on Comedy Central would be Tom and Crow duking it out over the last hamdinger. Oh wait, nevermind, they cancelled that too!

I seem to remember watching an early version of battlebots a long time ago on PBS or something, when it was engineering students MacGyver-ing these thing together out of toasters and toilter paper rolls. The stuff on now is just pure commercialism.

UAIOE 09-29-02 04:20 AM

I'd rather see the hardcore battlebots...the ones sporting flamethrowers harpoons and such

The ones where they make you sit like 300 yards away because of flying debris.

the bots on comedy central seemed rather tame compared to these other ones.

I liked Battlebots, but it got old after a while. They kept things moving along and kept the stupid outside the ring crap to a minimum, but in the end it was never really Comedy Central material.

I've never seen Battlebots, but that's a sport I would care about. At least you get to cheer on someone's engineering design. Now football or almost any other sport besides synchronized swimming? Who gives a crap.

I don't really think it sounds like a comedy though.

tasha
(synchronized swimming would get boring too, but I give it points just for being weird and strangly watchable. Oddly, I could see synchronized swimming tournaments fitting in on Comedy Central.)

Works for The Man Show, although I can't stand that show personally.

HistoryProf 09-29-02 10:14 PM

Thank God.....what a waste of airtime....

Crank Yankers tries to be funny, but fails miserably.

Has anyone noticed the sheer number of robot fighting shows now? I saw some on pbs, the learning channel, tnn, and now nickeldon (sp??).

My wife and I just watched two episodes back to back the other nite of the Man Show. We both found the stupid stuff they do pretty funny, and even pointed out the Annoying Guys in Bars that we actually knew.

Jackskeleton 09-30-02 04:08 PM

the man show is one of those that will get ratings simply because it has women jumping around wearing very little. Battle bots on the other hand plays on destruction and really doesn't seem like it has an audiance since there is so many of these types of shows.

Maybe all those copycat shows led to the demise of the original? I assume so, because it can't be the show itself -- Battlebots friggin' rules, no matter what you all say!!!
:D

Mike_AA 10-01-02 01:06 PM

It was bound to die out. A big fad, but I never watch it anymore. If it was on, I'd watch it for a bit, but the novalty ran out. Oh well, there'll always be something new and hip to replace it.

Derrich 10-01-02 04:25 PM

I just saw last weeks ep and BB is just as good as ever. Hopefully, another network will pick it up.

DodgingCars 10-01-02 05:06 PM

I thought it was interesting once -- but not as a series.

Jackskeleton 10-01-02 10:37 PM

the show itself maybe interesting, but when they try to mix elements of other "sports" shows it will die out fast. Now who will pick this up or will they just stick with a copycat

Peep 10-02-02 07:09 PM

Battlebots is great, but I'd rather spend a half-hour watching girls on trampolines.

Needless to say, my wife hates both.

Professor Frink 10-03-02 11:43 AM

How about Battlebots on trampolines?
:)

Mark Holtz 10-03-02 07:20 PM

Sadly, the production of season 5.0 isn't up to par with previous seasons. They've reduced the on-air time of Mark Berio, and now they have added seeming meaningless segments such as the "Passing Over", the fake music CD segment, or the "nutman" junk. It is funny when a robot flies across the battlebox thanks to a killsaw, but some of the segments.... ouch.

I Want More BATTLEBOTS

Howdy all --

I was wondering why I had not seen any promos for the new season of BATTLEBOTS. A little research into the forum history here at DVDTalk.com produced this result;

Comedy Central is dropping Battlebots
http://www.dvdtalk.com/forum/showthr...ght=battlebots

WAAAAAAAAAA !!!!!

I want more BATTLEBOTS! This is not fair! Who do we have to bl*w to get BATTLEBOTS back on the air?

I agree that it was a bad fit for Comedy Central... and that the show's announcing team was a bit hokey... and please don't get me started on Carmen Electra. But fighting robots ruled! Dude!

What basic cable network should we petition to get this show back on? I'd love to see NBC or ABC look at it and say, "Fighting robots? It's cheap, it's kind of like a sport -- we love it!" Maybe ESPN could pick it up... I mean, for Pete's sake they show the World Series of Poker on ESPN, surely they have room for BATTLEBOTS. Maybe the USA network or TNN, although that seems to be the kiss of death.

And please don't tell me to watch ROBOT WARS or ROBOTICA or whatever that silly TLC show is called. They waste too much time having robots climb over obstacle courses and go through waterfalls and... heck, I dunno, make banana daquiris, but whatever they do, they do NOT do enough

ROBOT FIGHTING

... which is exactly what made BATTLEBOTS so appealing. Help, help, help me!

Derrich 03-06-03 12:37 PM

Amen brother, Amen.

elise 03-06-03 02:29 PM

Though I'm not a fan, I agree Battlebots was a bad Comedy Central fit. Especially since they put it on before The Daily Show. That's just insulting to Jon Stewart. :)

It seems like good USA material. They used to have the gladiator show and those people seemed to have the IQ of lumps of metal.

I'm guessing one (or both) of those Sklar dorks.

Mourn 03-06-03 02:55 PM

Damn, i used to watch that show.

Nowadays, i mainly just watch the British Robot Wars... better time-slot and good robots finally.

Professor Frink 03-07-03 11:12 AM

I guess I should chime in, since I'm the starter of the other thread. It sucks extra hard for the builders -- without Comedy Central's support, the tournament won't even happen, TV cameras or not.

Bring back Battlebots, dammit!!!

Cheddarmuff 03-07-03 11:18 AM

I liked Battlebots also....

BTW...the two announcer brothers (sklar or something like that) are from Michigan...don't hate us all...
