Nancy lives very close to the Mexican border and some have said it's not unheard of for the cartels to pull off this kind of kidnapping. We are just hearing about it in this case because her daughter is a famous TV personality with big political connections.

I just heard yesterday for the first time that someone kidnapped Cal Ripken's mother 15 years ago, though she was returned in a day or two.

It's a highly sensational story of seemingly random violent crime against an old rich white lady in a border town. It's not even a story where Trump could be credibly blamed. Of Course Fox News is covering it. It's like their dream story, or at least their dream story that doesn't involve the Clinton's getting arrested.

The only reason this is getting so much media coverage is because Samantha Guthrie is a journalist. They look out for their own.

It's like, when a cop gets killed in the line duty, they make a big show out of the funeral, and cops from all over the country attend like they're giving away free donuts.

Not to be ghoulish, but if it goes a week since she was taken, and they say she requires daily medication to stay alive . . . you do the math.

It's getting MORE coverage because it's a famous person's mom, but I think it would be a national story regardless. People get shot or robbed daily. Old ladies don't get abducted out of their own homes. That is different.

They are just breaking that a 2nd message was received late this morning - same source as the first one though it still needs to be verified.

And you know Foxnews is praying to the heavens that the Mexican cartel angle is right.

They said they'd pay the ransom. I think the 2nd deadline was Mon 5pm. So there should be a development one way or another in the next couple of days.

So what? What's he supposed to be doing at night, wandering around the desert with a flashlight and bullhorn?

Would anyone criticize the sheriff for being at a basketball game if the person kidnapped wasn't related to a TV personality? I'm guessing no.

Maybe you haven't watched enough Law & Order SVU to know that if the police don't have the evidence to lead them to a kidnapper with 48 hours, then the only way they will get a break in the case is if the crooks fuck up or the cops get a tip from the public.

My friend, who is following this closely, said that now it appears the Guthries are negotiating for the return of her corpse.

Savannah Guthrie's video from Saturday could certainly be interpreted as such. "We received your message and we understand. We beg you now to return our mother to us so we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us and we will pay."

There is a $6 million ransom deadline for 5:00 P.M. today (local time, presumably).

My first thoughts after the Saturday video was that they were asking for return of her remains since they said celebrate with her.
