What factors help you decide whether or not to take on a new series or miniseries?

It's no secret that TV Talk traffic is way down drastically compared to say 10-15 years ago. And streaming and the massive amount of content that is continuing to be released is mostly to blame. There is simply no time to keep up with everything.

So what factors do you look at taking on a new series, limited series, miniseries these days.

This will be a multiple pick poll.

And a serious question, do you even really care anymore to keep up and chat online about shows? Or is it a chore and no fun anymore?

This forum used to have a ton of chatter on say Sundays and Thursdays. Now, it's crickets most of the week.

TV has changed. I was just thinking earlier today about how not so long ago I would scout out the EW fall TV preview to see what new shows I should sample. I did that for years, but the last time I did it was probably the 2017 fall TV season.

I would chat online, but I don't usually watch weekly TV shows anymore, and I rarely watch a streaming show right away these days. Unless you go looking for them it's not hard to avoid spoilers. For example I still haven't watched season 2 of House of the Dragon. I'm sure I'll watch it, but I also haven't been spoiled yet.

Runtime. Too many :45m - hour long shows. With the advent of streaming and limited run series, it seems like everything has to be long. I think it's killed the half hour comedy. So as a family we have 1 comedy and 1 drama, and maybe 1 current running show we're watching at a given time, but then we're fractured out depending on who's home with everyone's crazy schedules. So it's mostly shows I've seen before that I want to share with them.

Current lineup:
Family
Comedy: Happy Endings
Drama: Poker Face
Live: Only Murders in the Building

Me and youngest Daughter:
Comedy: Spaced
Drama: The X-Files

Me and Wife:
Light show: Caribbean/Beach house hunting shows
Drama: Professionals

Me and both daughters:
Jurassic World: Chaos Theory

Wife and girls (when I'm out):
Breaking Amish
Rupaul's Drag Race

So that comes down to what do I watch solo after everyone else is asleep/out, so I guess buzz & word of mouth from friends? Peacemaker was the most recent. Most nights I'm fine putting on a comfort show like Mythbusters vs. getting into something new. I've also found out over the last handful of years, I can't get into shows where there is no good character to root for. See, The Boys, It's Always Sunny, Orange is the New Black and Ozark. All shows I gave a chance and bailed on. Peacemaker season 1 kinda fits, but season 2 improved most of the characters to be likable enough. So getting burned by shows makes me hesitant to start new ones.

Actors, premise and sometimes buzz factor into my decision. Another factor is the talent behind the camera. If a writer/showrunner did something I really liked, I'll probably give his next project a chance. The number of episodes can be a factor, too.

The first thing I look for is if the names Lindeloff, Kurtzman or Orci appear anywhere in the credits. Then check to see I Bad Robot is listed. If not I will go by the show's premise.

For network tv, I'll record the episodes to the dvr.

If the episodes end up being piled up, they will end up being deleted unwatched.
