So this will be set in the 80s, I guess. Where in the TV timeline is his military service? Did He He the police force for a while to join the army?

This is one of the things that I think I like the books better, Harry was in Vietnam and was a tunnel rat. A lot of trauma he dealt with from his days in the tunnels that modern war does not have an equivalent to.

The horrors of WWI or Vietnam are more extreme than the horrors of the Gulf War, but the effect of the trauma can be the same. The violent loss of his mother probably fucked him up for life before he even enlisted.
