Based on the title I figured this episode would be the flashback to what happened on the ship. Best episode of the season so far. Really can’t wait for Kavalier to get his.

From the episode one/two thread, I hope you're happy now.

This was an awesome episode!! Just flat out hooked from start to finish. Incredible how that eye has so much character, just brilliant. Ready for an all out assault at Boy Genius' compound.

Much better episode then the last one.

I saw it as it was
Spoiler:
trying to keep its hosts alive, like how it was also trying to inform the lady of the escaping bug.

Have we seen all five creatures? Cos I only count four. Xenomorph, the crawling eye, super ticks, and plant animal. In this episode the rambling guy at the beginning (the one the ticks crawled into his ventilated skull at the end) mentioned "clams". Are those the unseen fifth species? Or am I missing something?

Overall, great episode. I wonder if all the whiners on YouTube will shut up since this episode swatted away all their complaints. Heck, it even explains why no early warning system alerted anyone that a ship was gonna crash in New Siam. It even hand waved why the impact wasn't more intense, given the ship was slowing down on its way to Earth. It also explaing why Morrow knew who Boy Cavalier was despite not knowing about Prodigy while being unaware that Miss Yutani was dead.

this show is like one big Alien movie. the production value is through the roof for a tv show. the characters, the acting, the tension and suspense is just like either of the first two movies in the series. it truly is a big movie.

I rolled my eyes at the canister escape(s). Reminded me of the stupid scientists in Prometheus.

Or it is commentary on the current stupid state of things.

Another dumb annoying crew in space. At least it meant less time with annoying smirking rich kid and his Peter Pan garbage. The old guy doing parkour to wrestle the Alien was pretty funny and the Captain running 30 feet ahead of the Alien flying down the corridor. Someone should tell Hawley using We'll Meet Again doesn't make him Kubrick.

It wasn't trying to inform her of the escaping bug, it was trying to distract her so the bug could escape unseen. That creepy little fucker is diabolical.

Top notch episode! I still have the usual criticisms, but I like what we did here!

Not sure why we are using spoiler tags, but I'll abide for the moment . . .

Spoiler:
I love the fact that we don't know which it is. Either motivation still makes sense. Even attacking the xenomorph leaves it unclear . . .

Yes, this episode made me happy that we got the ship's crew's story. I would have loved for this to have been a movie by itself. As I said, I'm enjoying the show as a sci-fi show, but I'm still not feeling it as canon in the Alien universe. Too many things that are boxed in and I'm not seeing the out to connect to the rest of the universe. I also am still not feeling this iteration of the xenomorph . . . too much "guy in a rubber suit" feel.

I was shocked to learn that this episode was not originally part of the line up, and wasn't conceptualized until after the first episode was shot. I thought they simply re-used footage, but they reshot chunks of it (according to the official podcast).

Two great observations from podcasts this week on the general state of the Alien universe:
  • From The Lost Drive In: The lore in Alien is so broken that there is no longer any lore.
  • From Earbursters: Alien is no longer a story, it is just a setting.
The Alien universe is no longer about space truckers, colonial marines, and alien encounters, it is simply a story of greed -- corporate and personal. That storyline was always there as a driver, but it was never the primary story. Pushing it to the forefront over the last several movies and now the show is a choice, but it has really diminished the effectiveness of the overall product.

The xenomorph look feels off to me as well. Thought of posting that but feared I might be "Shouted down" by a bigger fan that the look is accurate to this iteration or that one. I didn't come to this series (outside of seeing Alien 3 once because of Fincher) until about 5 years ago and only really love the original.

Good episode though.

Yeah, really strong "guy in a rubber suit" vibes this episode. I can overlook it though.

1977, Bolaji Badejo, visual artist and actor, 6'10"

2025, Cameron Brown, stuntman, 6'2"

I'd say he has the wrong physique to start with. I may want to say that stuntman training is very different than physical artist/movement training. Add that he is just putting on a rubber suit (20 to 40 minutes to get it on according to the official podcast) instead of going through a full application process. Also, we are probably getting too much "walking around" footage.

Edit: quick internet research shows many of the actors in the suit have been stuntmen, but those are also frequently the ones where other methods were used (puppetry, CGI) and we don't get full body shots of the man in the suit versions.

Really good episode.

The shot of the tick crawling into the hole from the headshot was cool.

I think a large part of the problem is that the xenomorph is overlit. It wouldn't be so obviously a guy in a rubber suit if we weren't seeing it so clearly.

Agreed about seeing the xenomorph too much in direct light but one scene was amazing.
When the alien was at a closed door but then climbed up and crawled along the ceiling, then we see Morrow coming out the vent on the floor. I thought that was incredible.

Agreed on this - that was a great sequence.

Watched this episode last night and is a highlight of the season for me thus far. Knowing the show largely takes place on Earth, it's somewhat bittersweet that my favorite episode is the one taking place on the traditional Weyland ship. Call me old fashioned, I guess...

That was awesome. Third best Alien movie was this hour of TV. Incredible beginning to end. Had to watch some scenes through my fingers. For the first time honestly since the original film we are getting new scares that we can't anticipate. That 'surgery' was so gross and shocking.

Octopus Eye is the scariest alien since...well, Alien. So well done.
