I remember once somebody asked Chris Carter if the X-Files theme had lyrics, and he replied
"The X-Files is a show.../ with music by Mark Snow...."
I still sing those lyrics in my head.

Snow's X-Files theme was so distinctive and unlike any other TV theme.

The X-Files theme was barely even a theme at all. Extremely minimalist, haunting and eerie. It suited the tone of the series perfectly, whereas a big, loud bombastic 80s A-Team kind of theme wouldn't have worked.

One thing about The X-Files that really amazes me is just how fully-formed it came out of the gate... the cast had great chemistry, the atmosphere was dark and moody -- more cinematic than most network tv at the time, and it had a definite style to, and Snow's music was part of that. Even from the first handful of episodes, this series knew what it was.

Dammit. Everyone is suddenly dropping like flies.

X-files is one of the greatest themes ever and 217 episodes is a helluva feat. On top of that he did almost 150 episodes of Smallville and almost 300 of Blue Bloods. That's a helluva one-two-three punch.

I've been watching it with my teen daughter (very slowly, in between other shows we're watching) and we're about halfway through season 2. It holds up remarkably well and what I've found especially interesting is the pacing. It just has a pace all its own, slow but deliberate. Actors and scenes have room to breathe and isn't frenetic like modern shows.

His music really went hand in hand with the X-Files. I think about the show and its right there adding the perfect amount of mystery, suspense or drama in that imitable synth style.
