The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

It started a couple nights ago, but I just caught the first episode on Hulu tonight...

The Shot

The entire precinct is looking for the escaped convicts from last season as the show opens, but there's a lot going on other than that. Two new rookies, who are very different from each other, join the precinct, and Sgt. Grey becomes Lt Grey. Oh, and there's a potentially devastatingly explosive plotline here, too.

This one felt a lot like a first season episode. It was written and directed by show creator/showrunner Alexi Hawley, so that's not surprising. Sadly, Tru Valentino is no longer on the show as officer Thorsen. I wasn't a big fan of the character at first, but they really developed him well and made him another asset to the show. With him gone one of the new rookies is going to have to step up. So far, neither of them seems to have what it takes to fill that character void, but, then again, Thorsen didn't seem like a great addition at first, either. We'll see. But this was a really good episode.

I was just checking to see if there was a new season thread!

I think the new rookies have potential to be interesting characters.

This is the first time in 5 years that I'm caught up with the show, so when I didn't see one I quickly rectified that situation.

I was thinking the same thing. Officer Thorsen started off less than spectacular, but they really developed him well. I wasn't a fan of rookie officer Juarez at first, either, but they did a great job with her! Hopefully we get the same kind of character development with these two guys that Thorsen and Juarez got.

The thing that really struck me as I was binging on The Rookie over the last couple of months is how high the quality of the show has remained. There hasn't been a dropoff. I'm really impressed with the producers and writers of the show. They've done a great job of maintaining the quality level, which (as we've all seen) isn't easy to do.

Right, it’s pretty mind-boggling that this is the seventh season. Some have been short, of course, but it’s still a quality show.

I liked how they continue to sustain the Feds universe, even if it was just the one guy this time.

I'm bummed that I can't watch the current episode until Friday. Something to look forward to, I guess.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

The latest episode was really good, again, starting on Plain Clothes Day, but not focusing primarily on that (good move, they did a PCD focused episode in the first or second season). There was a lot going on in the episode, and almost all of it was good. They maybe got a little overly dramatic with the off the job issues for the new rookies, but other than that I loved the episode.

The show is still killing it in it's 7th season. I just wonder how long it will run. Melissa O'Neil said she hopes it runs for 20 years, and that she'd stay for the entire run. She's smart - too many actors have left series because they had dreams of a serious movie career, or leading a new TV show of their own, only to find that their careers faltered after leaving their previous series. If you've got a great gig, stick with it. You may not get another gig nearly as good in the future.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

It was weird that Jenna Dewan was clearly pregnant, so they introduced a storyline with her character wanting to have a baby. But then they eliminated the potential pregnancy story, and now Bailey is missing form the show because of the real-life pregnancy.

I miss Thorsen. He brought a humor to the show that no one else does. Wonder if that decision was his or the show staff's?

That's a good question. I really liked that character (after a weak introduction, he got much better really quickly). I haven't read anything indicating why he's no longer on the show.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

I assume it's because the show is, at its core, about training entry-level rookies and they need a new rookie or two cycled in every now and then. Thorsen didn't need to be in a training program anymore.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

That makes perfect sense from a story telling standpoint, but I have a hard time believing that's why they would drop a character completely from the show.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

from https://www.forbes.com/sites/monicam...xit-explained/

“Of course. Tru [Valentino] is a great actor, and he was a huge part of our show for several seasons, and so we'd love to have him back in some capacity,” the writer told Screen Rant.“It just ultimately felt like, creatively, for where the show was going, that we needed to pivot a bit. But he's still very much alive in our universe.”

One day after Valentino’s departure was announced, on Aug. 9, the actor addressed the news on his social media. “I will always cherish my time on The Rookie but couldn’t be more excited for what the future has in store,” he shared on his Instagram story at the time. “I adore the friends and relationships made while being there. It was such an amazing opportunity and feel so lucky to have had the last 3 seasons. Thank you to the best fans in the world, I know I don’t talk much, but I appreciate you all so much.”

The 36-year-old actor also hinted that a return in the future isn’t off the table. “You never know who may pop back up in the Mid-Wilshire Precinct,” he added. “Until then, 7 Adam 19, this is Officer Thorsen, over and out!”

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

It makes sense that they need new rookies, but they can keep a character around if they really want to. But I guess they didn't.

I was wondering about Dewan too.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

Episode 3 kind of reminded me of a Season 2 episode in style and tone. Nolan is losing it a bit worrying about Bailey's ex husband running around free after escaping from prison.

This was good stuff. I like how Nolan had the mythical hit man cuffed, and lost him. On most shows the hero would bring him in. Here, the bad guy got away. I liked that turn of events.

They're so milking the ChenFord thing, too. It seems pretty obvious that they're going to get back together, it's just a matter of when, not if.

I'm still digging this show.

Well, that’s one way to sort-of-show Jenna Dewan.

Pretty lame to talk to a suspect in custody, but whatever.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

Episode 4 was another good one. I liked just about everything about it - just about. Lopez and Harper going into the old sanitarium alone was pretty stupid, though. They could have waited 10 minutes for backup. The place had too many places for someone to hide and do to Harper what he did. Waiting for backup and going in in teams prevents that from happening, and prevents the suspect from escaping.

Aside from that blunder in logic the rest of the episode was really good.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

Episode 5 was yet another winner. Really good episode. I loved that Bailey was willing to cross the line to take care of business. The producers/writers for the show have not fallen into the trap of letting plotlines drag on too long. They seem to get the number of episodes that a story arc carries through just right. They did here - and started a new story arc as a result.

Good stuff.

Sad that there isn't more activity on this thread. A few years ago shows like this would have active threads. A sign of the times, I suppose.

But The Rookie is still delivering.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

The last couple episodes were an arc within the longer context of Bailey’s ex-husband. Good action and tension. And they brought back a couple more characters from Feds, though not Britt Roberson. I’m guessing they’ll sprinkle them all in over the course of the season except Niecy Nash, who never appeared last season even though they brought back the rest of the team.

We all assume the new guy is lying about having cancer too, right? (We are up to date as of last week)

I don't get what they're trying to do with that character. At least the other rookie has a normal backstory to build off of.

Same and that's my assumption.

There doesn't seem to be much of a point to his character, especially in a show so filled with B-plots. Frankly I'd be fine without seeing Nolan's or Wesley's home life every again. The stuff in the squad room is far more interesting.

I feel the same way about SWAT every time they go to Hondo's marriage or home life in general.

What did I miss? They didn't say anything in the newest episode about that.

Just that he has a habit of lying and making a point about it implies he is also lying about the cancer. It would be more shocking at this point if he was not lying about it.

Re: The Rookie - Season 7 Thread

Episode 6 was another really good one. I love the personal drama that the show is focusing on. It makes the characters more real and more relatable. I really liked the fact that this episode didn't have some big, overarcing story. The conflict between Nolan and Bailey is great. I can see both sides. Ultimately, Bailey is overreacting because she doesn't fully comprehend how serious her actions were, and how they could affect John.

This is still top notch TV. I hope the show continues for a few more years.
