New Friday Night Lights in development from original producing team & Jason Katims
Rather than roll your eyes and scream No! The world of high school football has changed a ton in 13 years. There is potential to tell new and interesting stories with new characters. And bringing back Katims, who is a solid TV drama creator, is a good start.

The original did not work because of the stories. They had some shit stories. It worked because they caught lightning in a bottle with Britton and Chandler and the Taylor's marriage, a long with a bunch of unknown young actors that did a fantastic job with some stereotypical characters.

I agree the cast was awesome but I thought the stories (except for season 2) were great.
But agreed that with how much high school football has changed if they want to be accurate it would have to be a completely different series, and unless these guys are no longer supposed to be a competitive team I'm sure I'd be depressed to see the shenanigans that go on in modern HS football.

When the original series moved to DirecTV, later seen months later on NBC, for seasons 3 to 5 and got fewer episodes, I think that’s when they got their act together. And they cast two unknowns, Michael B. Jordan and Matt Lauria, who have become solid actors now.

Yea, no. The movie was forgettable, the thing that made the series great was the cast. It had some good storylines and some absolute shit storylines (Landry murder) but the cast was out of this world and I agree they caught lightning in a bottle.

The series came out in the mid 2000s and I think there is plenty of opportunity for new stories around football and how the lives of people in small town America have changed in 2024. It all comes down to casting actors who are believable for the series. I do hope it's an all new cast not the original cast who are now adults with kids in High School. That's been done too many times for teen shows that get revived.

I don't think they can reproduce the magic of FNL, but Jason Katims has shown that he can produce and write solid family dramas. Parenthood wasn't special like Friday Night Lights, but it was better than a lot of other prime time soaps. So while a reboot won't be the same, it could be a good show anyway. If they choose to bring back old characters, just bring back Tim Riggins and I'm fine.

I'm optimistic since Katims will be back but I agree that much of the magic from the show was due to the impressive cast.

That Landry guy isn't that bad himself.

Is it a reboot or a remake? Even after all these years, we can't trust news outlets to use the words correctly.

The official logline for the new series states, “Following a devastating hurricane, a rag tag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship becoming a beacon of light for their town.”

Taylor Kitsch, who played the moody high school football star on the acclaimed small-town drama Friday Night Lights, has revealed that he’s already been approached to be in Peacock‘s upcoming FNL reboot. “I’ve been asked, and we’ll leave it at that,” Kitsch admitted when asked about FNL during an interview with SiriusXM’s The Spotlight With Jessica Shaw.
Don’t expect Kitsch to put on football pads again, though. The actor is 43 years old now, for one thing, and the Friday Night Lights reboot — which officially went into development at Peacock last month — is set to focus on a new set of characters. “Following a devastating hurricane, a ragtag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship becoming a beacon of light for their town,” per the official synopsis.
Kitsch won’t be playing that coach, either, he states firmly: “I would come in and do something, maybe for an episode or something. But I don’t want to go and do the whole thing.” He’s also open to playing a new, non-Riggins role on the reboot, “maybe play an opposing team’s coach or something,” but he concedes that as soon as fans saw him on screen, they’d “be like, ‘That’s Riggins.'”
