He was either the father of Tyra Banks or Nia Long on the show.

I was Nia Long. I can picture them on screen. I just don't remember if her and WIll ended up getting married at the end of the show.

One of the first realistic father figures on TV. What a week this is with the passing of so many.

Damn. This is sad. I was too young to watch him on Good Times but I enjoyed seeing him pop up in movies and tv shows over the years.

His overly excited “I feel like breakdancing!” line in Coming to America makes me smile every time I watch it.

Re: John Amos dead at 84

You would have to be in your late 50s to 60+ now to have seen Good Times 1st run and still remember it.

Wasn't Amos the patriarch of the family on that show, but later died? Amos looked a lot older than his actual age. He was only 34 when Good Times started.

Yeah they killed him off after the 3rd season. He was fired for disagreeing with Lear and writing staff.

I remember watching Good Times some on tv but I watched Sanford and Son more.

8 years older than his TV son and 19 years younger than TV wife.

Re: John Amos dead at 84

I saw Good Times all the way through in syndication several times as a kid. Made me a lifelong fan of Mr Amos.

And then he showed up in Beastmaster, which was on TV a time or two in the 80s/early 90s.

My recollection is that he objected to them putting the emphasis on Jimmy JJ Walker's character. Amos thought that Walker's performance was a racist caricature throwing back to how Blacks were portrayed in the pre-Civil Rights era.

Yeah he was not happy about it and most likely was what he got into with Lear. Esther Rolle (Florida Evans) was even more outspoken about Walker's character.
