House of Ninjas (Netflix) -- From Toho studios -- Premieres 2/15/24

Ninjas existed throughout many pivotal times in Japanese history - but what if they were still secretly undertaking missions in modern society? Set in today's Japan, this series tells the story of the Tawara family, the last ninja clan that abandoned its roots after a particular mission. Now, the family must face the biggest crisis Japan has seen yet - one that threatens to shake the nation to its core.

The series stars Kento Kaku, who also serves as a co-executive producer. He approached this series with heightened motivation, saying he has bet staked life on this work. Kaku plays Haru, the second son of the Tawara family. Although he is an elite ninja with unrivaled skills, Haru's kindness led to disaster and a great trauma that still haunts him. The actors portraying Haru's family are Yosuke Eguchi as his father Soichi, Tae Kimura as his mother Yoko, Kengo Kora as his older brother Gaku, Aju Makita as his older sister Nagi, and Nobuko Miyamoto as his mysterious grandmother Taki, who watches the family from the shadows.

This comes out on the 15th. Netflix's U.S. YouTube page isn't promoting it for some reason, this trailer was on the Netflix Asian page. And yes, this is a worldwide release.

and you wonder why so many Netflix and streaming shows get completely lost. They are terrible at promoting non big IP originals.

Anyway, it looks pretty good.

Yeah, I was surprised this popped up on YouTube via Netflix Asia. It looks like lots of fun. I told my co-workers about it, and none of them were aware this was coming.

I’m put off by the title. The plural of ninja is ninja!

I really enjoy shows and movies that treat ninja(s) like a thing that people just...are and not something that would generate 10,000 more questions. This looks fine (and I am also a fan of Ninja Assassin).

This is now up on Netflix. 8 episodes and 50+ minutes each. Going to try to watch a few later tonight.

Had to do a double take at the beginning of the first episode. It just plops you right in on some action and I thought it was some sorta teaser / ad for the show at first (like those youtube trailer intros before the trailer)

Glad to hear this because I'm only on the first episode and I don't know how to take it. Is it meant to be funny? Quirky? Serious? I am listening to the English voices dubbed over and it's hard to believe how bad it sounds in 2024. You'd think AI could do it better - or at least find actors & engineers who GAF.

I'm watching in Japanese with subs. Some interesting family drama with some curious musical cues and songs. I like the premise and that it just throws you right into the middle of the story. I'm sure we'll learn more about Gaku and the Fuma clan, but it seems like maybe Gaku isn't dead?

I let my 12-year-old watch anime like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan. She likes this sort of stuff and it could be interesting to eatch together. How is it, in terms of adult content, sexuality, and violence, please?

I watch it in Japanese with the subs also. It think it's a mix of quirkiness and seriousness. While not exactly the same (and obviously different story), but the vibe is similar to Kill Bill, where you have all of that mixed in - serious aspects, quirkiness/humor, and interesting music selection.

Only 4 eps in, but no sexuality. And violence is pretty subdued (I'd say Attack on Titan is much more gruesome)

I really liked this series... it kind of has a Robert Rodriguez feel to it (think Desperado & Spy Kids). I need to change my VPN so I can view it on Japanese Netflix, because I feel the music choice seemed out of place with the English songs. The actor playing Haru looks a lot like Lewis Tan.

Wrapped this up last night and thought it was pretty good. I'm looking forward to a second season --- but it's Netflix and they'll likely cancel it.

It did okay its first week placing #2 in non-English TV with 29.8m hours viewed (4.2m views total), that would land it at #6 in the overall charts, it's in the Top 10 in 72 countries and #1 in Jamaica and Nigeria.

I'm three episodes in, but I am not getting all the love. I actually find it surprisingly boring. Does it pick up, or am I better off quitting now?

Well, I am just over 2/3 of the way through episode 5, and it's still so sloooooow. If it were at least intriguing, I wouldn't mind the slow burn. But this show feels like it was originally a middling anime from the '90s that had its scripts dusted off and remade in live action. It's funny that I revisited the trailer only to find that it covers most of what I've seen so far, but it makes it all seem so exciting. I know I only have three episodes to go, but I think I've given this show far too much time to get good. I really should have quit after the first episode.

I stopped watching midway through episode 2, due to boredom. This was weeks ago.

As I exited the episode, Warrior was recommend to me by Netflix.

I just finished 30 episodes of Warrior and never went back to this show.
