Tom Smothers(One of the Smothers Brothers)-RIP
He passed away from cancer at age 86.
I remember the Smothers Brothers Show being controversial back in the day . |

I am wondering who read this thread title and thought, "Tom Smothers, who is that?...Oh, one of the Smothers Brothers! "

I don't think they were known as single performers.

I always liked the Smothers Brothers. It’s funny because they were controversial back in their day but when I watched them as a kid in the 80s I remember thinking how wholesome they were.

RIP Tom. :( Their CBS show in the late 60's was quite controversial for the time, one time Tom made a joke about Easter, something about if Jesus comes out of his tomb and sees his shadow, there are six more weeks of winter. Lots of viewer complaints over that one. And on Christmas, instead of sending best wishes to the soldiers in Vietnam, Tom sent best wishes to the draft dodgers who escaped to Canada. They were very counter culture with jokes like that and many of their musical guests, kinda ballsy for network television back in the late 60s during the culture wars. Until the pussies at CBS cancelled their show.

I had a vinyl album of some of their stuff as a kid and thought it was the funniest stuff. The story about the hiking chicken still makes me smile.

I've had the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour Best Of Seasons 2 & 3 on dvd for a number of years now and always enjoy revisiting them. Tommy was an absolute genius - no one could play dumb as well as he could - and so incredibly talented. He & Dick together were the perfect blend of musicianship and comedy. Everything about that show was top notch and certainly ahead of its time when it came to social commentary. A shame that the network censors essentially canceled it. Here is a clip from the brothers' appearance on the Tonight Show from back in '92 ...

Re: Tom Smothers(One of the Smothers Brothers)-RIP
My took my dad to see them live on tour back in 2009 and it was really great. I've always enjoyed them, even as a kid, to watch them swing back and forth from cerebral to silly with ease. Dick Smothers has had a tough ten years or so, declaring bankruptcy and they stopped touring because money was getting to be a tough issue for the brothers, at least from the outside. They both seem like great guys, sorry to hear Tom battled the big C this year, it's too bad.

I just watched this last night, he was fantastic, and Johnny's reaction to the imitation was priceless. And the bit they did on stage after that was funny as shit.
