They seemed pretty cowed/beaten down. Like they all waited for the leader to start eating before they did. I just figured they stayed out of what was happening at the steakhouse.

I was looking at the cable guide last night and right now it lists the finale as 9-9:45 EST

Hope they still include the scene with the

I thought that happened earlier in Colorado but maybe I’m misremembering.

I've been waiting all season for that too.

Can't wait for season 2. Looking forward to seeing
Spoiler:
who all here is team Ellie or team Abby.

We should probably do a poll for that once it gets to that point.

Which I would be fine with if they had included a single shot of them cowering under their beds in their bedrooms. It's so weird that nothing like that was included.
I kept questioning myself, like "isn't this where all those people are supposed to be living?"

What would happen to all the children and the few adults that were left? It seemed like all the main adults that were running the group are now dead. That only leaves all the weaker towns people left with no idea how to fend for themselves even though the other leaders were doing some very questionable things, they were keeping their people alive. The rest of the town, who weren't even people, would likely end up dying pretty quickly.

Probably cowering somewhere hoping those that keep them secure are dealing with it, but Joel pretty much took out all of their alphas.

In the spot with Mazin and some of the cast that airs after the episode on HBO Max they showed them filming those scenes and they had huge fans blowing snow on Pascal while he was walking in town so I think they tried to recreate the snowstorm in the game as best they could.

I had a quick question in my head about this during the final scene as well, but then I realized the exposition already provided was enough for me. It was pretty clear that outside of David's enforcers, the rest of the townspeople only gathered when David deemed it ok (mealtimes, services) and otherwise they remained in their respective homes so they would stay protected (and controlled and ignorant of things like their fellow humans being used for food). This wasn't a walled-off thriving community like Jackson where people were able to just mill around safely and David clearly used the constant threat of potential danger to his advantage. That was surely extra true when the townspeople knew the enforcers had gone out to find the very dangerous man that had already killed one of their own. I had no problem accepting that no townspeople would be showing up until David had given them the all-clear that the threats had been neutralized - or even accepting that they never leave their own homes anyway outside of the designated times provided by the leadership for mealtimes or specific tasks.

Not having played the game (yet...I have it downloaded for my PS5) and avoiding any spoilers...is episode 9 going to end where the first game ends, or is there a whole lot more to cover? Basically, I'm just wondering if Season 1 is going to be the complete first game or if that's being split up between seasons 1 and 2 (meaning we could get seasons 3 and 4 for Part II)?

Yes, it will end where the first game did.

“The first season is the events of the first game—and you can tell, if you have played the game, from watching the marketing materials that we’re also covering the events of the Left Behind [downloadable content],” Mazin said. “I think that the amount of story that remains that we have not covered would be more than a season of television. So assuming we can keep going forward, the idea would be to do more than just one more season. But this isn’t the kind of show that is going to be seven seasons.”

Mazin is referring to The Last of Us Part II, released in 2020, seven years after the original game. Both releases follow the lives of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey); in the first game, they traverse a zombie-infested United States for a chance to save the world. In the second game, the pair deal with the fallout from that trip. The implication here is Mazin wants to tell that over two seasons. So, season one is game one and seasons two and three are game two. The story is all out there for anyone to read about or play, a fact Mazin said they took full advantage of in crafting the show.

“We have the benefit of something that Neil didn’t have when he was making the game initially, which was knowing what the Left Behind DLC was and knowing where the second game goes and understanding a little bit more about the fuller context,” Mazin said. “So we certainly took advantage of understanding that fuller context when we plotted out this season.”

Mazin is very clear, though. For him, The Last of Us is the two games and the DLC. That’s it. And though fans have certainly wondered if Druckmann was working on part three, or if he could provide major future story beats a la George R.R. Martin and Game of Thrones, it seems none of that is in the cards should the show reach the end of the second game.

“Unless some miraculous thing happened and the video game production was accelerated by 1000% and the third game magically came out,” Mazin said through a fit of laughter, “I am not interested in going beyond the existing source material. As a viewer, I have no problem watching shows that just keep going and going and going. No problem. But as a writer, I don’t want to be in the position of spinning plates to just spool out season after season of stuff. To me, it’s important that things are purposeful, and if they’re purposeful, that means they have endings. That means everything you do is carefully selected and chosen, not just there to keep going.”

I would think the 3rd game would be done by the time they finished airing two more seasons since they will make us wait like a year and a half between each season I bet.

Holy shit that was an intense episode.

and Joel wasn’t screwing around with his interrogation of those two. David was a really creepy antagonist here. Especially when he was thinking that he and Ellie had some kind of connection. Loved when Ellie just snapped and went off at him. Ellie was smart and resourceful and also showed that ferocious side of her.

Bella Ramsey said the episode was filmed in February (assuming last year) in Calgary. Man, they really took a long a long time to film these. Especially because the conditions had to be right.

^ Yeah, they shot for 200 days from July 2021 to June of 2022 + some reshoots and additional photography later in 2022.

I mean, if there's one genre you can more easily get away with during a pandemic, it's going to be a post-apocalyptic one.

I can get behind the idea of the townspeople didn't care to intervene with David's business ... but I doubt they would have just let the thing burn down without coming to see what was happening.

Between that and the "blizzard," it feels like there was some budget shuffling from this episode. I saw that behind the scenes piece and only then did I know they tried to create the blizzard. It didn't work on-screen.

Please tell me the finale is not only 45 minutes long ...

I disagree. The remaining townspeople were not people of action that would come investigate. They were shown to be people who would see a fire and think, "The very dangerous man our guys went out to find must be wreaking havoc. Now I really need to hide and stay safe."

Beyond that, the fire started inside and had only been going for a few minutes. If the other townspeople were shut up in their homes, they probably wouldn't have even perceived there was a fire yet.

it kind of seemed like they were hoping to shoot on a number of genuine snow days, but they ended up instead with days that are so cold it doesn't even really snow. Those are fun.

I decided to jump back into this - just a very average show - not sure why people are going crazy for this. I'll finish this season out.

It has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes so you might be in the minority on that.

And I could care less, what is the point of you even saying that? I'm sure there are a ton of people who share my opinion. It's juet a simple, average show.

If that’s an “average” show to you, then your bar is in a weird place. You can not like the show, but if that’s “average”, then your scale is wildly out of whack.

For example, I truly dislike “Seinfeld”. I think it is unfunny and mean-spirited. But considering its place in the comedic landscape, I would never say it’s an “average” sitcom. It’s one I don’t like but it obviously appeals to many others so I’m willing to accept that there is something significant there - it just doesn’t work for me.

I wouldn’t say “I don’t understand why people are going crazy for it”…like I see something they don’t.

This goes for all kinds of things I don’t care for - wine, sports, cooking, jazz music, etc.
