The worm was probably my favorite part of the first 2 episodes. Really great special effects and an exciting sequence overall.

It off-set the stupid bullshit of Galadriel just freestyle swimming across an entire fucking ocean.

I love how Elrond and Celebrimbor were just out for a casual stroll and showed up at the Dwarves mountain thousands of leagues away, without supplies or anything.

Eh, morons would just complain that it took too long for them to get to the mountain. Here, through the magic of editing, they're there in a flash. :sarcasm:

The power levels and magical abilities of Tolkien characters are really sketchy.

Gandalf is supposed to be this badass wizard, but it seems like he spends most of his time whacking shit with a stick.

It all comes down to Tolkien's stance on "magic" versus "witchcraft".

Basically, Elves aren't all powerful magical beings as we might popularly associate them (thanks in no small part to how Jackson and Walsh embellished Galadriel in the movies) but their abilities were more of a practical sort.

Finished the first two this weekend. I thought the first episode was overloaded with character introductions, but better than taking an entire season to introduce everyone properly before the story can advance. Loved the second episode, as it really hit the ground running. Particularly loved the effects for Khazad-dûm. Dwarf stormtrooper helmets are pretty cool too. The kids ramming together wearing giant stone heads was a nice touch to lighten the mood.

As for the Stranger, from what i've seen online it's most likely

Spoiler:
Sauron himself. Apparently he takes on a more pleasing human form to deceive the Elves and Dwarves to help him forge the Rings. Mithrandir doesn't arrive in Middle Earth until after Isildur takes the Ring from Sauron

This stuff really doesn't bother me at all because it's fantasy. You can say, well the author set up limits as to the "powers" of elves and they should be followed, but those are rarely strictly defined. So she swims across an ocean?

I know this is sarcasm but the only time Galadriel has actual "powers" is when she has her ring called Nenya. Up until then she's one of the best warrior elves out there. The incels just keep getting pissed off because instead of being on the the battle field she should be back home baking lembas bread.

I agree with the overall sentiment that while this looks great (which given the price tag it allegedly carries , it should), the story is a bit boring and the acting a bit stilted. Also,
Spoiler:
I don't know if the old stranger is one of the Maia or not, but let's not forget this isn't exactly following the same timeline as it's just drawing bits and pieces from what source material exists. So if it turns out to actually be Gandalf or Saruman, it shouldn't be a surprise.

Also it seems they’ve changed the origin of the Orcs. In the Simarillion Orcs are evil incarnations of Morgoth- captured Elves that are tortured and bred. This is one thing that kind of bothered me.

As far as "The Stranger" goes, I think there are three possibilities.

Spoiler:

Sauron. - Sort of an obvious choice. But why we would he arrive in a meteor? As far as I know, Sauron stayed in Middle Earth after the War of Wrath ended and Melkor was cast into the Outer Void. It's not like he would have gone back to Valinor, or followed Melkor into oblivion.

One of the Blue Wizards. - While it's sort of canon that the Istari didn't arrive in Middle Earth until after Sauron was defeated by Isildur, there is some evidence that the two Blue Wizards came to Middle Earth earlier than that.

And this one is outside of the box and sort of a cheat, but...

Olorin. Which would make the Stranger a pre-Gandlaf Gandalf. Olorin is the Maia who will become Gandalf, and it could be that the Valar have sent Olorin to Middle Earth as a sort of observer, so he won't technically be Gandalf here, and return Valinor at some point before he returns to Middle Earth as Gandalf. His current interaction with the Harfoots is what will later give Gandalf an interest in and affinity for Hobbits. Could even be a way for Manwe to teach Olorin that the way to defeat Sauron would be through these halflings. Goes back to Gandalf's speech in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey about the deeds of ordinary folks being what keeps evil at bay.

Another thing in favor of him being Olorin is this might be the only reason the Harfoots are included in the story. It's too early in the ME timeline for Hobbits to make their presence known, and their only interactions in this whole series might be with this "Stranger."

Yeah, Olorin is the best bet.

Sauron has to be this pretty boy looking "The Witcher" dude but slightly dainty and almost like an albino elf-type. I just watched House of the Dragon and Sauron in this age would almost take the form of Daemon but much better looking from the countless artwork out there of him during this time.

I liked it... sure, it was a tad slow and they introduced a LOT of characters but I expect that in these epic adventures these days. Visually, as you all already noted, it was amazing. Theater quality.

Then he’d have to be a human king first wouldn’t he?

Yeah. I assume he will become a king at some point or usurp a currently ruling king, possibly with Galadriel's help. It's all assumptions at this point.

I saw episode 2 several days ago, but didn't comment. I liked it better than the 1st episode. I especially enjoyed seeing the complicated relationship between Elrond and Durin.

Is this the same Elrond that was played by Hugo Weaving in the movies? Excuse me lack of knowledge of the lore, but how old can Elves live to be?

Elves are immortal provided they don't receiving any life ending wounds (which sounds strange as I type it but that's how it is in lore). Same Elrond.

I will wait on final judgement till the season is over, unless it totally gets terrible. First 2 episodes are ok, nothing terrible or great.
