George Carlin's American Dream (two-part HBO documentary) - D: Apatow & Bonfiglio - premieres 5/20/22
George Carlin's American Dream, directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, chronicles the life and work of the legendary comedian.
Carlin’s career spanned half a century during which he headlined 14 HBO comedy specials and appeared on The Tonight Show over 130 times, constantly evolving with the times and staying sharply resonant up until his death in 2008 and beyond. The documentary examines a cultural chameleon who is remembered as one of the most influential stand-up comics of all time.
The two-part documentary tracks Carlin’s rise to fame and opens an intimate window into Carlin’s personal life, including his childhood in New York City, his long struggle with drugs that took its toll on his health, his brushes with the law, his loving relationship with Brenda, his wife of 36 years, and his second marriage to Sally Wade. Intimate interviews with Carlin and Brenda’s daughter, Kelly Carlin, offer unique insight into her family’s story and her parents enduring love and partnership.
Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Patton Oswalt, Stephen Colbert, Bill Burr, Bette Midler, W. Kamau Bell, Sam Jay, Judy Gold and Jon Stewart are among those interviewed for the project.
HBO Documentary Films, Rise Films and Apatow Productions present George Carlin's American Dream. The documentary was edited by Joe Beshenkovsky; executive produced by Apatow, Bonfiglio, Teddy Leifer, Jerry Hamza, and Kelly Carlin. For HBO: executive producers, Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham.

This is out tomorrow.
For regular HBO watchers, it’s on at 8 pm eastern for Part 1 on Friday, and the same for Part 2 on Saturday.
Not sure how they are releasing it on the streamer.

...and THIS is the reason that I hung on to my $7.49/mo HBO subscription.

Been a Carlin fan and this doc does a great job covering his career, good times and bad. His wife was a saint to stick it out with him.

Haven’t watched yet, but I know he did A LOT of cocaine for years, and not even to party either so much.
You could almost tell during some of his shows.

I watched all 4 hours of it, actually about 3 hours and 35 minutes.
Very good stuff. I’m a longtime big fan and didn’t know some of this.

Damn that was good. I actually teared up at the montage towards the end of the second part that played George's stand-up over footage of current events. We're so fucked.

He was a saint too since his wife also had substance issues and he stuck around.
Maybe he would not be happy of those love messages he sent to Sally his second wife being available for public consumption which would go against his image as the cranky guy

Haven't quite finished this yet, but I love it as much as I thought I would. Carlin is a legend and honestly, for me, one of the most articulate, intelligent, thoughtful public speakers of the last century

This was fantastic. Amazing footage and behind the scenes info. SO much I didn't know about him. He went very dark during the latter part of his career and he lost me at that point, but this put a nice perspective on it.

I watched "Jammin in New York" back in 1992 when I was still in high school, and recently rewatched it on HBO On Demand, and, goddamn, the man could literally see the future, couldn't he?

Even though it might have rubbed people the wrong way he was right about all the good leaders who preached harmony and peace eventually got assassinated.

His daughter told me on Twitter that George thought it was his best work too.

That was fantastic, I've been a fan for many years and now I want to go back and watch all the specials they showed clips from. Watching this, I've realized that my way of thinking about the world, etc. is very similar to his, even the dark stuff at the end (especially due to the way our fucked up world is today), not sure if I should be worried or not. At least I've never used coke.
