Is binge watching the new normal?

I mean to say, do people just let build up and then watch all? I understand catching up. But, is bingeing the new normal and weekly serial pretty much dead?

i mean I get binge watching, but I’ve only done that with shows I either watched weekly on broadcast or cable or ones that were done with its run. Of course, rewatching eps is good too.

But, do most people wait and week to week nearly extinct?

Yellowstones ratings say no. I prefer binge watching but will watch weekly if it's something I really like.

If all episodes are available, I prefer watching one episode a day. It gives cliffhanger episodes much more substance.

Binge watching works for me.

For Hulu and Amazon shows, I just wait for a full season to conclude. I don't do the 'social media' thing so I don't see spoilers.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

I voted yes.

I still watch weekly release shows episode by episode, but I think that is generational. Most people I know just wait for an entire season to be complete and then binge it,

I had subscribed to the CBS streaming to watch Discovery and Picard week by week, but now I am just going to wait a while, subscribe for a month and binge them.

Oh, and it is bingeing, not binging.

I don’t think there is any one show I wait week to week on cable or broadcast. I just don’t have time or attention span. I usually have a few eps. build up. Even my fav Brooklyn Nine-Nine, this quick season I have to binge at some point. There’s my answer.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

Yup definitely for me. I haven't watched a weekly since Mando season 2 i think. I waited months for Succession season 3 to finish to binge, waited months for Dexter new blood to finish to binge etc. And now i'm currently watching Foundation which you guessed it, i waited hah

Yes that’s why this forum is dead.

I want to binge. I don’t want to be on a schedule. On-demand is the way to go, always.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

For me, not necessarily binge. But definitely on-demand on my schedule.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

I remember shows better if I watch weekly rather than binge. But I also don’t have the self-control NOT to binge if I can. It does seem like a lot of services are moving away from releasing everything at once when they know it’s a “flagship” show.

You can get 'rewards' if you bing, though.

I like that things are available on demand, though that, and bingeing, are just more signs that our society is collapsing under the weight of click-addicted people who can't delay gratification for more than a fraction of a second.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

Depends on the show for me. Usually, I can't watch more than two episodes of a show in a row. I need to switch it up.

Some shows like Cobra Kai are very easy to binge watch but there's also a long wait for the next season so I try to prolong the experience. Just finished it about 2 weeks ago. So a little under a month since it came out. Is that still a binge? Half binge. Still gonna be a long wait. The new Ozark I'm working on at a pretty decent pace, will probably finish within a week.

If it's a show that I recently discovered that has multiple seasons already, recently for me Line Of Duty or Wentworth, I tend to binge a season or two then take a break.

But the way Amazon, Max, Hulu, D+, P+ do their week to week doesn't bother me at all. Definitely helps with discussion online or in person.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

Most of the shows I watch are the on the broadcast networks or on channels that release shows weekly (HBO, Showtime, AMC, Disney+, etc.). I usually want to watch most of these shows as soon as possible, so of course I will watch them weekly. Some get saved up, and I may watch them later if I have time, but usually I can't watch more than 2 or 3 episodes of a single show in a row unless it's really good.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

Greatly depends on the content. I have no idea how people binge stuff like sitcoms and formulaic shows like procedurals. I love Seinfeld but find watching more than 2-3 episodes in a row a real chore.

Tightly spun, serialized narratives with frequent cliffhangers are better suited for binge viewing. I'm sure I would have blown through most of Lost the first time if I had never seen its original broadcast.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

I rarely binge watch anything, even streaming shows released all at once. I find I get burned out really quickly if I watch like that. Most of the shows I am currently watching are on a loose schedule that rarely exceeds one episode a week. For me waiting builds the anticipation for the next episode.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

Yes it it. But I don't do it. Week to week stuff I watch as it airs, and streaming as I find time, and that's not 5 episodes in a row of 1 hour episodes.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

I never really watched Tv as it aired, I didn't get into shows until I was in high school when the OC started and I gave up about 10 episodes into season one. Then the DVD came out and i watched it all. After that I would just wait for all the shows to come out on dvd watch them in a few days and wait a year. I do the same thing now, and if its not on dvd ill stream the season and watch it when its all over. Alot of the time I don't even watch shows until their cancelled or ended. I cant do the week long or more breaks and adverts.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

I generally wait until a show has run its course before ever starting it, and will watch an episode every night or so until finished. There are a handful of shows that I watch season by season, but none that I watch on a weekly basis.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

If the show is good, I'll binge the shit out of it...if the entire season has dropped.

Re: Is binge watching the new normal?

I don't think it's very new. People started transitioning more into that with DVD and DVRs.
