THEM (Amazon) -- horror anthology series -- EP: Lena Waithe
A new series coming to Prime Video on April 9. The Emorys move to Compton, but Palmer Drive isn’t what it seems. From Executive Producers Lena Waithe and Little Marvin – THEM. About THEM: THEM is a limited anthology series that explores terror in America. The first season, 1950s-set COVENANT centers around a Black family who move from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighborhood during the period known as The Great Migration. The family’s idyllic home becomes ground zero where malevolent forces, next door and otherworldly, threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them. |

Just finished the series. Lots of good stuff here but there are a few things that bugged me with regards to one of the characters.

Had to fast forward through the last few episodes. There's only so much violence one can watch against black people from crazy white people.

The wife and I binged this over the weekend. I didn't expect to get pulled in so completely, but I was. I probably would have skipped it entirely if not for a Stephen King tweet that he saw the first episode and liked it (I generally trust his instincts for a good horror story). It was at times extremely painful to watch, but so well done. So many times I just wanted the Emory's to strike back at all the racist assholes. The way the supernatural elements worked into that was well written, IMO.

I was loving this until the last ep which didn't satisfy me.
And Betty's story...WTF? |

Overall, this was very good, with some really creepy scenes, but sooooo heartbreaking. I was definitely hoping for a bit more comeuppance, although Clarke Wendell's last scene was pretty satisfying. Also, I was disappointed in the Black Hat Man origin episode. Not so much in the episode itself, but I would much rather have seen more of the current timeline. I realize they had to establish a lot, particularly for the penultimate scene, but I don't think it required a full episode. I thought both the young girls were great. |

After Get Out, Lovecraft Country, and this, I think black people being terrorized by racist white people is the new torture porn.
And that's how it is in the real world, which is the point. It's fucked up. |
