Just to be clear, you don't get why the top producer of prestige television, one whose parent corporation already owns one of the most popular IP franchises in existence, would want to make a prestige television show by adapting that IP series of books as series of TV seasons -- a model they used on a far less popular book franchise just a few years ago to make their most popular and successful series ever?

And that's your right.
HBO will have a very tricky time navigating this project given the backlash JK Rolling will likely bring about (and deserves). But there's no escaping that the books are beloved by millions and millions. I don't fault HBO for wanting to make this series, nor do I think the film series was so spectacular that it could never be improved upon. We'll see who ends up owning WB -- if it's CBS, I expect a total dismissal of any concerns, but if it's Netflix, I hope there will be some context presented surrounding the project.
The massive success of the recent Video Game indicates that there is still a lot of interest with engaging with this material.

I don't have a problem with the project. JK Rowling is an ignorant person, but others a constantly trying to bait her into explaining again and again that she doesn't understand that there is a difference between sex and the social construct of gender. I think she would have shut about it years ago, but a lot of people want her to say this stupid shit, to keep a controversy going.
Either way HBO knew about all of that before hand so, I'm sure they are banking on the big chance that the brand of Harry Potter is bigger than the damage JK Rowling may cause.

My problem with the project is that it makes JK Rowling money, which she then pours into anti-trans causes. I can't support anything HP related because of that.

I don't have kids but there is no way I would let my child be in this. Imagine the online hate and harrassment they are going to have to put up with for the next decade.

I think you greatly overestimate the number of people that follow her controversy and are activist enough to consider harassing child actors, might be 10% of DVD Talk, but more like 0.001% of the general population.

Big fan of Hans Zimmer. Never heard of Bleeding Fingers. Regardless, it's gonna be hard to top John Williams scores for the first three movies. There was a breezy and enchanting charm to the music he wrote for those movies. Any word if they are at least going to incorporate his "Hedwig's Theme", or are they going for 100% new music?

I guess Zimmer will make a completely new score, since there isn't a connection to the movies anyway, but Zimmer said, he will honor what came before, so perhaps he will use some parts of Williams' music.

To me, The Wizarding World seems like a dead franchise.

For a while, it was the biggest thing in the world with the books and movies rolling out on a regular basis.

And then... there was The Cursed Child which wasn't particularly well-received and the Fantastic Beasts franchise that floundered so badly at the box office it was scuttled after the third of a planned five movie run.

And the author herself doesn't seem very interested in continuing and expanding it and is instead focusing on other projects and... interests.

I mean Cursed Child won 6 Tony Awards including Best Play. It's still playing on Broadway 8 years later -- almost unheard of for a non-musical.

It might be successful as a play, but the story is not particularly well-regarded in the fandom. There are enough contradictions with other established material that there's an ongoing debate whether or not it should be considered part of the canon. I did read the book, and found the story underwhelming, and if they ever do make it into movies (or a HBO series) they'd probably need to do a lot of touch-ups on it. The kids from the original movie are the right ages to star in it now, but I doubt that would happen with the way things have gone down between JKR and the cast.

Plus, I'm not really a fan of the idea of dropping stage productions into franchise canon. There's a certain amount of elitism involved where one would (likely) have to make a vacation out of viewing the play and pay quite a bit of money for the experience, unlike a book or movie. And even then, you only get to see it once, unlike a book or DVD that you can enjoy again at your leisure.

And, on the subject of stage productions, I was able to track down a slime tutorial of Stranger Things: The First Shadow on youtube and thought it was fucking awful. If I went to New York and paid out a thousand bucks plus to see it, I'd want to burn a pile of trash in the lobby of the theatre.

Also managed to track down a slime tutorial of Cursed Child, but it was of such poor quality that I ended up deleting it from my hard drive. Maybe there are better ones out there... I dunno.

Same boat here, I just looked and apparently it is a common way of naming bootleg videos of stage shows when uploading them to youtube, to try and avoid having the video taken down for copyright infringement.

Yeah, I just learned about the term myself not long ago. They use the term to disguise the content of the videos because "slime tutorials" that show people how to make slime from glue and baking soda are so common on the platform.
