Series finales that always get you

No matter how many times I watch this I lose it.

24: Live Another Day. Jack Bauer being apprehended and flown off to a Russian prison to die.

It gets to me because I think the character deserved a better ending.

Sorry, but the granddaddy of them all is "Six Feet Under".

Sam adjusting the Geronimo picture in the Cheers finale will always be great.

The series finale of Three's Company always gets me. Swinging bachelor Jack Tripper has spent a decade living with two women and having his landlord all up in his business all the time.

He finally wants to get married, but Vicki just wants to live together! Then, her father (who hates Jack) becomes their landlord . . . so he can be up in their business all the time!

Twist after twist that you never see coming.

The last episode of The Larry Sanders was both funny and moving, the surprise appearance of so many big stars like Seinfeld and Jim Carry wasn't as common as it is now, the most satisfying, entertaining finale to a series I'd seen up to that point or since.

My experience of the end of Six Feet Under was transcendent, and not in a pleasant way. I was upset for a solid week. I'd be living my normal life, then suddenly I'd remember, and I would become angry and feel like crying. It got so bad, I eventually had to go into denial, convincing myself, "You can't see into the future. Those were just fantasies. They didn't really happen."

It made me realize how ill-equipped I was to deal with the eventual deaths of people I loved in my real life. I knew it could happen at any moment, and spent a lot of time thinking about grief. It was rough, and I've felt like my reaction revealed immaturity, or ignorance, but I think in the long run it was beneficial.

Second Larry Sanders - just rewatched it recently. Fantastic.

Yep, Six Feet Under wins the debate every time.

Even if the final episode was just average, the final scene holds a lot of weight for me. And it doesn't even have to be anything major - sometimes the simplest endings kinda get me.
The final scene in Wings I really liked with just Joe and Helen leaving for Europe and Bryan and everyone else back to work with the customers walking around and the theme music playing always gets me. It's more about the feel than anything else.

And you?

Just staying in the Star Trek universe, DS9 definitely had the best ending of all the series.

TNG had a great ending episode but since they went straight into filming Generations it didn't feel like an ending. And then it just never ended. Nemesis was the worst movie to end on as you can totally tell they thought they were making another movie. And now we have the divisive Picard to kind of deal with.
Enterprise was really controversial, almost universally hated. But I think it works fine if you take the episode prior to the very last episode as the series finale. They kind of hijacked the last episode to be a quasi ending of all TNG era trek.
I enjoyed Voyager's finale but thought they got it kind of backwards with their homecoming happening in the beginning of the episode. It too seems to be pretty controversial.
TOS didn't have an ending but I do enjoy their simple send off at the end of ST:VI

So yeah DS9 definitely has the best, most definitive ending. That's why in a lot of ways I kind of don't get all the calls for a DS9 movie or a reboot because they wrapped it up quite nicely. Bittersweet but nicely.

Lost? - I dunno, I really hated the ending at the time but part of me thinks if I rewatch it knowing how they ended it I might be able to accept it a lot more the second time around.

DS9's finale theme was about going home. O'Brien to Earth, Worf to Q'ono'S, Odo to the link and Garak to Cardassia. That's why literally the last half hour is painful goodbyes.

Voyager infuriates me. We had no closure. What became of the Maquis? Of Tom Paris? 7 of 9? The Doctor? I hated that ending.

And don't get me started on Enterprise. Even Jolene Blalock hated it.

The following pissed some fans off, but it inspired me in my life. Realistically, there was no more potent way to end the series based on the underlying philosophy of the show:

i also loved the Mad Men (that Coke commercial and seeing Don's face at the end) and Breaking Bad series finales. certainly, not as good as ones mentioned, but since they were two of my favorite shows ever, they went out in grand form imo. certainly, Breaking Bad was a heartbreaking, action-packed, but justified end.

Honestly, I didn't remember that it had a particular finale; I assumed it just didn't get renewed.

Is this for real? I never watched the show start to finish, just caught it on tv here and there as a kid. Did they actually give shows in this time period finales?

Cannot comment on Six Feet Under having not watched the show, but always loved the final Quantum Leap episode. The list of finales I hate is very long.

The finale of "Three's Company" set up a spin-off (or follow-up, if you like) series called "Three's A Crowd" , which didn't last too long.
