TV shows being edited for content due to social issues

4 episodes of 30 Rock will be removed from streaming and syndication due to characters in "Blackface"

https://deadline.com/2020/06/nbcuniv...on-1202966816/

So they will not be on the new Peacock service or any VOD platform. This was requested by Tina Fey and her co-producer of the show.

The episodes that were requested to be removed include the season 3 episode 2 titled “Believe In The Stars”, season 5 episode 10 titled “Christmas Attack Zone” as well as Season 6 episode 19, “Live from Studio 6H” and the east coast version of season 5 episode 4 “The Live Show”. These four episodes are in the process of being removed from NBCUniversal’s sales platform. They currently working with partners to remove the episodes from current runs. All episodes are expected to be removed from Hulu, Amazon Prime iTunes and Google Play by this week.

So the only way you'll have them is if you own the physical media.

FWIW, I checked various platforms and it looks like it has already been pulled, but I bought the complete series on iTunes last year and all the episodes in question appear to still be playable for me.

I should probably go ahead and buy a digital copy of Silver Streak while I'm thinking about this.

All “owned” will still be owned. They won’t remove it from you. Pulling is beyond silly and childish. It’s a comedy.

Tina Fey asked the network to pull it. It's her show and she doesn't feel that type of "comedy" is appropriate anymore.

I don't remember the scenes at all.

But yeah theyve been good about not removing owned episodes that get pulled. I still have Stark Raving Dad on Vudu as well.

One thing I did notice is that 3.2 is the Oprah Winfrey episode...so that's gone now.

This has always been a zero sum game. So many people warned corporations against caving to outrage mobs. This shit is only going to proliferate through all entertainment mediums.

The episodes will never see the light of day again. Tina Fey was the show's creator and head showrunner, 30 Rock is her baby. Thank goodness 30 Rock has already come out on Blu-ray. I doubt they'll force Mill Creek to re-author the set but you never know.

Because you don’t like someone telling you what you can and can’t watch?

I don’t remember the episodes to be honest. But I’m not one who is in an uproar about censorship and the SJWs.

It’s Fey’s show. But, If you think she’s overreacting to the current climate, then I see that perspective as well.

I see a lot of comments on Twitter calling her a coward and hypocrite and caving to the mob cancel culture when you’re afraid something minor will piss them off.

One of the episodes is the live episode with the faux Amos and Andy sketch starring Jon Hamm and Tracy Morgan.

This an absolutely hilarious piece of comedy, and the point of the whole thing was to present something that was obviously offensive, and the show even contextualized it as offensive, and Tracy Morgan's character in the sketch called it out as offensive. Hamm's blackface is not even actual blackface, as he looks like he just has dirty smudges on his face, and his portrayal of a white actor in the 1950s portraying a black man is so over the top and outlandish that outsize nature of its offensiveness is part of the joke.

Basically, it is a situation where an actor put on smudge-face in service of making the point that blackface is offensive, and Fey feels that it must be censored because people could be offended by it.

Essentially, for white people, we have reached the point where blackface is like the N-word. You just aren't allowed to do/say it. It doesn't matter why you would do/say it. It's just banned.

Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel are smart business people. They know that there is no upside for them to invest energy and cultural capital in explaining or defending what they did years ago.

Oh, I can request that four out of 138 episodes be pulled, and I issue an apology, and then I can can basically walk away clean from what could become a whole rigamarole over something that I did ten years ago. Yeah, do that. Make it go away. I'm moving on with my life.

Why can't they put a disclaimor saying this episodes features humor that might offend some people and just keep the shows on the aiir?

I think they did a spoof of the real housewives of Atlanta too and will that be pulled too?

It was not my favorite episode but I know there is somebody out there that wants to complain.

Because it is 1000 times easier to apologize for doing it and then act like it never happened, and get credit for being socially conscious as well.

Might as well pull any show ever that has anything that might be offensive to POC. I mean, that’s the right thing to do, right? Also cancel any shows with cops.

While we're at it, we should ban every film that depicts women in a sexist light (i.e. 75% of films before 1960).

Yes? I think that the problem of destroying literature/film/music in the form of censorship is a very valid concern.

The episode where Jenna wears blackface is great. It's the Oprah episode.

I always felt like their satire was above being just comedy. Are we going to pull the episode where Jack pretends he's Tracy's father too?

I've watched every 30 Rock episode probably 100 times. It plays on my TV like a classic album.

So they're going to pull the whole Oprah episode? That sucks. If I were making a list, it would be in my Top 10.

Dang, now they're pulling an episode of a show that I actually wanted to watch again:
