I actually don't mind them telling their own story in the context of what happens in the books. In fact, the show only Empire story is like the saving grace of this project.

But it feels like with stuff like Salvor Hardin shooting up people and robots being able to kill humans (and obey orders to kill humans) they are just like doing the exact opposite of maybe the most well established pieces of the series. Even the whole "psychohistory can only predict large movements and not the actions of individuals" is like thrown completely away.

The backstory and filler bits are boring as hell. No, I don't care to waste an hour finding out about Gaal's heresy, nor do I give a damn about anybody's love life.

^^ I think it's important to know some of those things if we're getting a multiple season show

I've been loving this show so I'm looking forward to catching the finale this weekend.

They had already established that mathematics is heresy on her planet and that she was exiled as a consequence. Took about 5 minutes of screen time. Other than that what is there to know?

That finale was something else. The Empire part continues to be the best part of the story, mainly due to the acting but the scripting is so much better than the rest. The Terminus plot finally went somewhere but they basically handwaved everything because apparently Seldon is not really a mathematician or a psychohistorian, he's a wizard who can do whatever the plot demands of him including accurately predicting the future and knowing details of history that nobody else knows.

BTW
Spoiler:
He totally either directly or indirectly caused the fall of the spire, right? We never find out who the "real" culprits are and in this episode we find out he knows a key detail in the history of the relationship between the outer worlds and the Empire. Either he planned it himself or he leaked that information out. So he's basically a murderer in addition to being a grade a a-hole, who had his followers sacrifice their lives on a half truth.

I know most movies and series change a lot when adapting from a book, and I usually don’t mind, but for some reason I’m really not liking what they’ve done to the story here. I’d probably be enjoying the series more if I didn’t like the books so much.

Brother Day's vengeance was BRUTAL. That entire "gesture" had my mouth hanging open. And her fate... yikes.

So the Vault is
Spoiler:
a literal transubstantiation of Seldon, both body and mind? But he was also on the ship circling the Second Foundation, at least his consciousness was?

That part was a bit puzzling.

Demerzel has now had to
Spoiler:
kill two people she deeply cared about

because of her programming. Her final scene, her final shot...

Overall, very good first season. I pretty much agree with everyone's assessments about everything Empire being the very best thing about the show. They probably spent too much time spinning their wheels on the Terminus storyline, but it got to where it needed to be. Next season's time jump will prove interesting.

No, he only predicted its occurrence via psychohistory, as well as the Outer Reach instability and revolution.

For Seldon:
Spoiler:

There is a copy of his brain taken from that chip that is in holographic/robotic form going to the second foundation. Actually initially I thought that the Vault was some kind of portal and that was the same Seldon copy we were seeing. But of course not, instead his actual body was preserved by that pill and combined with the coffin with technology that we've never even hinted at before that transformed him into the Vault. So we have two not Seldons around with now diverging experiences. But more Jared Harris is better.

I know he predicted the occurrence via psycho history, studying the sightings of the ship, but nobody else thought that was too Deus Ex Machina to have everything be part of a plan when there was no feasible way any of that could be predicted? Even if he could predict the ship, everything else after that culminating in going back to the Vault and then unlocking it in that way? Again, psychohistory can't predict the actions of an individual (or so we've been told) yet his plans rely sooo much on individuals doing things a certain way. It was almost comical to me that he came out, explained everything, stopped a civil war that had been raging for generations, revealed that he had just lied to everyone, then for... reasons that I don't think he ever explained, he goes back to whatever he was doing and leaves them be.

Re: Foundation (Apple TV +) -- S: Jared Harris -- Based on the books by Isaac Asimov -- Premieres 9/24/21

Not sure I’m feeling the Gaal - Salvor Harden connection and story. Maybe it gives more context to Gaal’s “historical” (?) voiceovers, but still not caring about her. Honestly, I think they breezed through her trip to Trantor too quickly. If she’d had time to develop and the audience sympathize with her, I think the audience would be more attached to her.

I do agree with HokeyBoy - that speech from Day was something else. It’s like we as the audience were able to put together the pieces just as she was. It’s as if my reaction mirrored hers.

Of course I think he was bluffing, and it was interesting to catch the blurb about how deep rooted the resistance was than they first believed.

I also agree the last shoot of Demerzel was very impactful. Super creepy. However, totally didn’t see her action coming. I really appreciate how they set that up because I thought they we’re going to have Day off Dusk!

I’m assuming we’re going to no longer see some of the characters from this season. If so, I’ll miss Hugo the most.

Binged this this weekend. I have never read any of the books and am not familiar with the story/plot.

Wow! Started of slow but picked up speed quickly.

Lee Pace and Terrance Mann are the best parts of the show… loved the Spiral Walk episode.

I'm excited for Season 2.

Oh, and according to the chronology, Asimov’s I, Robot kicks this whole timeline off. I did not know that.

Yes, they talk about the robot wars especially when talking about a certain character. Then they throw the three laws of robotics out the damned window so I pretend it has nothing at all to do with I, Robot.

The series works best, I think, if you go in not having read the books or at the very least having no expectations that it will follow the books at all. The books just by format (and probably age) are difficult to adapt, but if you come in with no knowledge, the best parts of this (the trinity emperors and Lee Pace) are the stuff they made up almost entirely and the worst parts of this (everything to do with Salvor and Terminus) are their adaptation from the books.

Yup, this is me… and the same can be said for Wheel of Time (which I watched last week) and Shannara (which I watched awhile ago) - again, not familiar with either book series.

Big, long, well loved book series are so hard to adapt to the small screen.

But I can see what you mean.

Apple+ in general just seems to either spend more or just have a higher threshold for production values. Even something like Ghostwriter looks really good.
