Vagrant Queen (SyFy) -- Based on the comic series

Former child queen Elida has been on the run since her mother was shot and killed Commander Lazaro, the man responsible for bringing down their empire. A highly skilled fighter, Elida has been living in hiding and making ends meet as a scavenger while the unhinged Lazaro obsesses over tracking her down. When Elida's old frenemy, Isaac, shows up with news that her mother is still alive, it takes the help of the optimistic mechanic Amae, to escape Lazaro's army and begin the rescue mission across a dangerous galaxy.
To save her mother the team must break into the heavily guarded region of space where Elida once ruled, but an encounter with a group loyal to her former throne forces Elida to face her past as a child queen. Cannibalistic aliens, dangerous planets, shootouts, karaoke, and parking tickets complicate the journey further, and they don't have long before the increasingly deranged Lazaro catches up to them.

It's a poor man's Killjoys with more aliens in make-up this time, but a much weaker cast overall. Gave it one episode and won't be back. Seems to be chasing a female demo, as Syfy ran afterwards a goofy, self-produced "Women in Sci-Fi" special.

I watched 15 minutes on Youtube. My lord it's bad, really bad. I don't understand how anyone could have green lite this. The production value is crap. It's a level of cheapness I haven't seen in ages.. The actors are bad. The writing is bad. The storytelling is bad. SyFy has become a trash heap. After the Magicians is over, it will be the first time in decades they don't have a show I watch.

Re: Vagrant Queen (SyFy) -- Based on the comic series
I see everyone took the words out of my mouth...was it supposed to be intentionally bad (bad acting, bad special effects, even bad prosthetics, the alien that she disarms...literally, at the beginning of the show, I have seen rubber Halloween masks that looked more authentic)? It has a color scheme that makes it look like it popped right off the pages of a comic book but wow...just to pile on, it was indeed really bad. Even the guy from Wynonna Earp did not even bother to try phoning in his acting on this show. Not to mention the acting skills of the villainous dude chasing her down with his super hot comb torture device thingamajig is so comically bad I do not know where to begin complaining about his performance on the show. When folks say they have seen better acting at their local community theater they are not joking.
I was watching and thinking to myself as others on this thread were thinking the same...Syfy cancelled Killjoys and Dark Matter so they could replace those shows with this one?
If I do not have the desire to watch another show/movie on my TiVo or on Netflix/Hulu/Disney+ I would let this run in the background while I goof on my tablet, but I really wonder how much of what we saw during the pilot was intentionally bad or if things will get slightly better after a few eps have aired? As tons of folks on this site have noted a million times, lots of shows that went on to become fan favorites have had genuinely bad pilot episodes. We shall see.
ETA: I want to clarify what I am trying to ask when I say was this show intentionally bad because folks are probably looking at me funny going why would someone want to make an intentionally bad show that gets cancelled quickly but I guess I was wondering if something about this show is flying right over my head, I am not in on the joke, or something like that. Maybe the color palette of the show (one of its only bright spots, pun intended) and stilted acting are really faithful to the graphic novel it represents...I dunno, I am aware that 99% of the time no one sets out to make a deliberately bad show, but maybe this show is the 1% of shows intended to make the audience wonder what the hell were folks thinking when they green-lit this.
I confess that I was actually really excited when Djariya posted about this show...I was like, oooh, I missed the announcement about this show coming to the airwaves and was looking forward to a new Syfy show. I then watched the show...and well, cue the sad trombone.
Anyway, I think I have put more thought about the show in this very post than the show-runners did so I will just move on with my life. Dark Matter turned into something special, and while the jury is technically out (as most agree it may take some shows 2-3 eps to hit their stride) I am not getting that vibe that this will happen with this show.

Re: Vagrant Queen (SyFy) -- Based on the comic series
I think the issues you raise are mostly budget issues - the ratings on Syfy are at comically low levels for everything they show. Krypton, a great show, got axed because it was just too expensive for a network struggling with ratings. They sunk a ton of money into Krypton and by season two was getting pathetic ratings despite being their highest-rated show.
I would expect low-budget productions for all their shows going forward.

I've read 2 glowing reviews of the show that say it succeeds even with its low budget. I usually have no interest in SyFy shows but this one looks the most interesting to me. Not enough for me to pay to watch it though. Hopefully it ends up on one of the streaming services after the season.

Okay, I could have saved myself a lot of words as a couple reviews confirm that some of the cheesiness was indeed intentional. I do like that one of the reviews said the same thing I did that the Alien masks move like a Halloween Rubber mask (which made me chuckle).
Anyway, like I said just a couple posts up from this one I still plan to watch.

So what's with the ropes and dropping down from ships instead of actually landing?
What's with "Another Galaxy: Not Yours?" Do the creators not understand the difference between galaxies and solar systems?

The series has been moved to a late evening slot on Thursdays, which pretty much means it's dunzo.

An 11:00 pm - 12:00 am slot on a Thursday...lol. The only way most people will watch will be from their DVR recording as plenty of folks are working from home and not in a position to stay up to watch as it airs. I just hope that it does not end on a cliffhanger as I have decided to stick it out until the end.

Re: Vagrant Queen (SyFy) -- Based on the comic series
I thought Killjoys paled in comparison to Dark Matter but gave it a try and stayed for the duration. Thought I'd try Vagrant Queen the same way ... er .... ugh no. Terrible space effects (but Ep. 3 surprisngly had 2 good sky shots - the double moons and the fleet in the atmosphere), and terrible monsters (are those rat dudes w long legs on every world?
) ...
) ...
