Re: Lego Masters
I like all the Lego stuff and I even like Will Arnett, but I just can't bring myself to watch a reality competition show. I mean, they get 15 hours to build something, and its edited to look like they worked on it 15 hours in a row - no bathroom breaks? No stopping for lunch? And the whole "immunity brick" thing? :eyeroll: The worst are the teams, though. What, the "Beard Bros"? The "Helmet Head" ladies from the Ozarks? It's cringeworthy.
I guess if it was on cable, hosted by Adam Savage and didn't have the patented FOX DRAMA METER!!! jacked up to 11, I'd like it much better. |
Re: Lego Masters
I watched this with my son and we loved it! The creativity is phenomenal.
Do we really need to see them take bathroom breaks or eat lunch? |

Re: Lego Masters
It's S1/E1 of a brand new type show... I'll cut them some slack. I'm not even enamored with the contestants at all --- and they are the show. I just love the creative concept... based on the hate the show is getting though, I don't think it'll have legs going forward.
|
Re: Lego Masters
I enjoyed it. I don't know what people were expecting ... it's standard reality show competition stuff.

Well, bathroom breaks probably not. But watching them eat lunch might be better (as in, more "organic") than the one-on-ones they do with each team... which are like every other reality competition show ever. Like, I didn't mind the shots of the chefs smoking out back or relaxing on Hell's Kitchen (and the conversations held thereof). But the one-on-ones were always just pointless filler: "My name's Billy. I'm from Nashville. Gordon Ramsay thinks he knows Southern food he's wrong, and I'll show him! Hurr durr..."
I didn't like that some of the entries got their own little animated sketches and others didn't, which kind of gave away who was going to win (or at least who the frontrunners were). I think that's a cool concept but maybe save it for after the judging? I dunno. Also, my dad watched it with me and his main comment was "they're spending 15 hours on building and it's basically for nothing?" And I kind of understand where he's coming from, that's a lot of work to just be dismissed like that, but I'm sure these guys are all superfans and have designs in their heads before even coming in. |
Re: Lego Masters
Come on, guys. Sure it's obnoxious and loud, but it's a show about adults building with Lego bricks. How often do we get to see something like that on television?

Re: Lego Masters
My 14-year-old son, who is very quick to laugh at his mother's reality TV indulgences, really enjoyed the pilot. Looks like we finally have a father/son show to watch, though I still need to educate him about how real "reality TV" might be. :)

Re: Lego Masters
I enjoyed it. Crazy they are building for 15 hours. My family will continue to watch.

Eh, I'm fine with the focus on lego. The Will Arnett stuff is cringeworthy but I think that's intentional? Way too many people at this point to know them beyond "beard guys" and the like but that's par for the course with these kinds of shows.

How is it all for nothing? Isn’t the grand prize 100 grand? I think that’s something. Pretty good odds too, compared to the lottery.
I know the experience probably helps them grow as a team or something, so I guess we'll see if these people improve or if most of it is just ingrained decades of building and the best builders will rise to the top. If every build has engineering of some kind some of these teams are already in trouble. |

With no elimination and no points system of any kind, they seemingly could have twiddled their thumbs for fifteen hours and gotten through. Heck that one team basically started their true build at like six hours left and they got more praise than some of the other teams.

Re: Lego Masters
Episode #2: Good choice voting off
Spoiler:
They were by far the worst builders. Pretty sure my two sons would've come up with a better creation. The green tentacle monster was a pretty cool build. That team, along with beard team and the gold brick owners, are by far the strongest contestants. |
Re: Lego Masters
Yeah, that tentacled monster was legit as hell.

Re: Lego Masters
This show is interesting on several levels: First, Will Arnett. Second, the coolness of what they can build with Legos. Third, the unintentional humor created by the general weirdness of the cast.

Re: Lego Masters
What happened with Mayim? She was like in the first 20 minutes of the show then - poof - disappeared. Made me wonder if something happened behind the scenes and she just left.
|
Re: Lego Masters
Steve Harvey and The Gronk should be hosting this show. "You know how hard it is to find 'dem brown Legos?"

I’m watching and it is almost lazy in it’s effort. Arnett literally does the least for a host as do the judges. I thought Making It was soft in it’s presentation. Man, I was wrong. |

She had a proper exit, Arnett asked her if she had to go. She replied yes so he bid her goodbye.

Re: Lego Masters
They had this same challenge in the Aussie version. Was my least favourite one. Just about any lego looks good getting destroyed in slow motion
The challenges will get better |

Making It wasn't exactly intense, but it was heartfelt and tried to avoid cruelty or mocking it's contestants. That's going to work for some people and not for others. It didn't really pull in the ratings the second time around, so I was surprised when NBC renewed it.
Here, it feels off. Especially when they are given so much time to do a project and waste so much arguing or going around in circles. |

But for me, Making It’s softness works in the show’s favor. It is not exactly culinary art but the makers have to show talent.

How much extra did the pay those cosplay models to show up in those outfits?

Re: Lego Masters
Like Legos but not this show. The host thinks he's funny but isn't, and the judges come off really arrogant. The idea of contestants destroying their creations was just stupid, and the criteria was even dumber: the judges told one team too much of their model survived, then told another team not enough of their model survived... as if there's a right and wrong way to destroy a model. Cutting objects in half was a silly idea too. I don't see this show lasting very long.

Re: Lego Masters
I thought this last episode was much better as far as the actual Legos building went. There were some pretty inventive and cool looking things built. And some...not so much. But in the first few episodes it's almost as if the constraints of the task made the artistry and technique of using Legos almost incidental. I much preferred this week. It was an interesting task and allowed the creativity to flow.

Re: Lego Masters
I'm starting to wonder if some of these people actually even build their creations or if it's all staged. We don't really see much of them building anything, just a couple of shots of brick placements here and there. Everything about this show feels kinda fake.

Re: Lego Masters
As a competition show, it needs to abide by the FCC's regulations regarding game shows. Producers likely sway judges' opinions to some point, but the show by law cannot be "fixed."
