Premiered tonight, Thursday, September 26 on CBS.

re: Evil (Now on Paramount +)

I watched the premiere tonight. I thought it was pretty well-made. The actors (see below) are very good and the story was interesting. The premise covers well-trod ground, but there are many places they can go with it.

I was mainly interested initially because of the actors:

Katja Herbers is the lead, playing the skeptical forensic psychologist. I liked her a lot in the series Manhattan where she played a physicist helping develop the atomic bomb. She also had a role in Westworld last season.

Mike Colter (Marvel's Luke Cage) plays a man who works for the Catholic church, investigating claims of miracles, demonic possession, etc.

Michael Emerson (LOST, Person of Interest) looks to be playing a villain, or at least an antagonist to the main characters.

I like that Herbers' character immediately assumed rational explanations for things. And while Colter's character doesn't come across as totally credulous, he's a 'believer' so I imagine there will be something of a 'Scully/Mulder' relationship between the two of them going forward.

While I wasn't blown away by the premiere, I liked it enough that I'll tune in again next week.

I have to say I enjoyed the pilot. It probably helps that I like the actors to begin with. The show was getting a lot of positive reviews. Coming into the season I was looking forward to this show and will stick around as long as it’s on. Problem is I’m not sure CBS will have an audience for it.

I liked the first episode and have now set to record the series.

Ratings were pretty weak for the debut but all scripted drama these days has poor ratings.

Episode 1 is re-airing tonight for those interested, after NCIS:LA. Air time may depend on when the afternoon football game finishes.

Even if the ratings were completely abysmal, CBS can always dump shows they own into the summer schedule and their streaming service. (Like Elementary, Instinct, etc ...).

This series has some promise. It's biggest problem is that it's on CBS...but considering the studio's relationship with the showrunners (Robert & Michelle King did both The Good Wife and the current streaming series The Good Fight), CBS will be a little less quick to pull the plug if this series is on the bubble in the ratings (it's premiere ratings were solid, but far from spectacular).

I am surprised this one went to the network instead of to CBS's streaming service...seems they could do a better show if it was a little more R-Rated, don't you think?

Really not a fan of Emerson but I enjoyed this enough to stick around until the eventual cancellation.

I agree. It seems like a limited premise. Every week will be a procedural de-bunking (or not) of supernatural events. That might get old pretty fast.

The pilot was solid, but if each episode has to ride the fence, so to speak, it will get frustrating quickly. It needs to go somewhere, but I fear it will play it safe....

I think this will be the problem. An X-File type show is hard in the current peak TV era.

Emerson got a nickname on Lost as the "Most-Beaten Man on Network TV," so when he got slugged in his first appearance here, I couldn't help but laugh.

I just watched the John Glover/Theater Producer episode (which included a good bit of black humor) and enjoyed it quite a bit. Obviously, the creative team is having a bit of fun with the premise.

The show is combining the technology and supernatural elements well. I think it will get cancelled at some point, probably just as things are starting to be revealed

As long as they mostly have a case of the week format, i'll keep watching

I did enjoy how they got around Emerson's character jamming his voice in the latest episode.

One of my fav new shows

Yeah, I liked last night's episode a lot. Both plotlines were pretty dark and creepy. The girls playing with the AR headsets was an interesting twist on 'corrupting the innocent' and the story with the psychopathic boy was really disturbing--more for the things that happened and their ramifications than for the portrayal of the boy himself.

They are dropping lots of clues that something is up with Kristen's husband. I hope we get some more answers about him soon.

Original Desmond 10-18-19 08:26 PM

re: Evil (Now on Paramount +)

Yeah the parents killing their psycho son reminded me of the Walking dead when they killed the girl who almost killed her little sister

i actually found the horror VR game quite scary lol

PhantomStranger 10-19-19 12:21 AM

re: Evil (Now on Paramount +)

That was very dark for network television, especially on CBS. I can't remember seeing anything like that on the channel before.

I think this fits more with CBS all access I’m surprised it isn’t airing there

Where this episode lost me is there is no way after trying to drown the baby that this kid wouldn’t be locked up. The reason he wasn’t so that there could be the shock ending. That and the fact the kids are annoying I think I’m finished

Renewed for a second season. https://deadline.com/2019/10/evil-re...on-1202766547/

Season 1 will end after 13 episodes. Apparently it was designed that way by the Kings,

That’s good to hear on both counts. I’m pro shorter seasons.

Good. I was a bit concerned that this show would become tired, take fewer chances and become complacent filling out a traditional season. My biggest concern is that it goes an "X-Files" route, -and not in a good way, -by never really "commiting".

Original Desmond 10-23-19 09:38 AM

13 episodes is perfect for a first season

Yeah i hope they show proper proven supernatural cases and very clear technological hoaxes, so we never know which way the case of the week will end up

I've stayed up to date with this one so far. I think the main reason I stick around is Aasif Mandvi. Feels like a show that will struggle to come up with unique stories after a season.

They need to expand the mythology. It's still early. I have no doubt by Episode 13, we'll know a lot more about these characters.

I binge watched the last 4 episodes after not watching for a while and it has really gone downhill

Please kill off the stupid mother and her stupid storyline

The Leyland character is just pathetic. If he's so dangerous, start a full on offensive against him

Now it seems they are throwing out weird plot points just for the sake of it

Will keep watching to see if it improves

As a fan of the show Glitch, I was pleasantly surprised to see "James" from that show is playing Kristen's husband here.

My patience with the show is also wearing thin. The writers have come up with interesting characters but I don't think they all fit together that well. I wish they'd drop the VR videogame sub-plot.

I deleted this from my series recording. I realized I have no interest in seeing where these characters go within the story. It became stale far too quick.

Sadly, after 2 eps, it got old pretty fast.

I like this series quite a bit - although I wish they'd have left the husband off-screen. My "guess" is he's not going to be around long. ;)

Pretty good episode this week. The compulsive singing thing with the girls was kinda creepy at first and then eventually horrific. The explanation, while far-fetched, at least kept things in the physical realm.

The scenes with Kirsten's mom and the bullied daughter were really good and subtly menacing.

Looks like we have to wait until the new year to find out what happens with David.

This seems to be one of those polarizing shows--it appears to me that most people either love it or hate it, with not a lot of folks anywhere in the middle.

I'm in the "love it" camp. This week's episode was wonderfully creepy, and it reminded me of that too-brief period, around Seasons 2 and 3, when The X-Files was firing on all cylinders.

January 9th is a long time to wait for another episode. I'm getting the feeling that when the season ends in January, I'm going to binge the season a couple of times before the fall Season Two debut.

I actually think the show has good writers but the execution is problematic for me because I can already tell I'm not going to like their endgame for the plot.

Original Desmond 12-16-19 08:14 AM

re: Evil (Now on Paramount +)

Yeah this show doesn't know if it wants to be mystery of the week or build up the villian or explore the background of Powerman

The Villian has such direct ties to his mischief, it's just stupid. He's banging the mum, he's seeing as a therapist the gun kid and the youtuber

They either need to raise the game, kill off one ot the daughters or have more intriguing mysteries of the week
