Battlestar Galactica reboot from Sam Esmail coming to Peacock
NBCUniversal has unveiled a broad range of programming for the first slate of originals for its streaming service, which has officially been dubbed Peacock.
Perhaps the biggest titled announced for the service is a reboot of the classic sci-fi series “Battlestar Galactica,” with “Mr. Robot” creator Sam Esmail executive producing. This is the third version of the series to make it to television. The original aired for one season in 1978 on ABC, which was followed by a short-lived continuation called “Galactica 1980.” Sci Fi Channel (now Syfy) then rebooted the series back in 2003 with a three-hour miniseries whose cast included Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell among others. The success of that project led Syfy and Sky Television to commission a new series with the cast of the miniseries returning. That show ran for four seasons and also spawned two TV movies, wrapping up in 2009. A prequel series, “Caprica,” aired on Syfy for one season in 2010.

I'm not sure how I feel about NBC doing this series. I feel they are know more for comedies than drama, although I watch almost nothing on the "big three" ABC/NBC/CBS these days... Not sure I would subscribe to a service for this show...

It's NBC Universal. NBC Universal did the previous show. It's an ad supported service.

Oh cool!! I remember the Universal logo vaguely from the show ending credits, but its been a long time since I watched it. Did NBC buy them after this aired or did they have an arrangement with SciFi?

Another version already? Like Groucho mentioned the last one wasn’t too long ago and was pretty good.

They merged 15 years ago. Universal, NBC, SyFy are all under the same corporate umbrella. Then under GE, now Comcast.

Oh great. So BSG is getting redone with overly pretentious dialogue and episodes that are 33% longer than they need to be. Sigh.

"a new story within the mythology?"
Does that mean it's going to be a series set within the established Moore BSG universe, or a third iteration of the BSG concept?

Wasn't Caprica like a side story in the same universe and it like failed miserably? If they don't have cylons battling against colonial vipers they're going to lose a lot of people.

It lasted only 1 season, but had a really long mid season hiatus that killed its ratings and momentum.

Edit: didn’t realize Caprica was a prequel. Never watched it because heard it wasn’t that great, plus it didn’t last long.

[QUOTE]A BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Spin-Off Is Coming!

If you travel in certain circles (the sort of circles that frequent publications like Nerdist.com, for instance), you can’t go very long before playing audience to a wistful mention of the good old days when Battlestar Galactica was still on the air, ten years back. For the past decade, BSG devotees have been ruminating on the highs and lows of Roy Moore’s genre-defying reboot, debating the merits of its finale, and hoping against all odds that we might someday get to return to its vast, imaginative universe.
And now, in a wholly benevolent effort to turn our wist into whimsy (it’s definitely got nothing to do with money), NBC is now planning to bring BSG back again (again) by way of its new streaming service, Peacock. The platform won’t merely play home to old episodes we’ve enjoyed time and again; NBC is developing a new reboot of Roy Moore’s 2004 series, created by Mr. Robot mastermind Sam Esmail.
Details are scant at present; we only know that Esmail’s take on the BSG mythology will be inspired directly by Moore’s 21st century reboot and not Glen A. Larson’s 1978 original. That said, there has yet to be any suggestion of whether Esmail’s Battlestar Galactica will carry over any of Moore’s extant story lines or characters. Esmail was quick to scuttle the “reboot” tag, however. In a tweet, the creature reassured fans his show would “explore a new story” within the mythology.

Sam Esmail
✔@samesmailBSG fans, this will NOT be a remake of the amazing series @RonDMoore launched because... why mess with perfection? Instead, we’ll explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar. So say we all!
If you’re not familiar with Esmail’s work, the Mr. Robot writer/director has also worked on the Julia Roberts-starring Amazon Prime thriller series Homecoming, and is launching a separate series for Peacock: Angelyne, per The Hollywood Reporter. This project will tell the story of the eponymous L.A. billboard icon whose identity was, for ages, shrouded in mystery. Emmy Rossum will star in the limited series.
Esmail will produce Battlestar Galactica; the project has yet to lock down a writer to bring the longstanding franchise to life anew for the 2020s.
Other than calling Ron Moore Roy its a useful story...

Does anyone even know what a "reboot," "spin-off," "re-imagining," and "remake" mean any more?

re: Battlestar Galactica reboot from Sam Esmail coming to Peacock
The terms are all so stretched out to fit whatever is being made anymore. Let’s call this Battlestar Galactica again because the name is popular, but at the same time it’s not actually that and is a spin-off that’s not tied in with other versions so it’s a reboot too. So convoluted.

Judging from how Homecoming turned out as well as over half of Mr.Robot....one can only hope this stays in development hell.

You know, there were always questions about Moore's take along the lines of "were there any other ships that survived and went off in a different direction?" They couldn't have met Cylons as we would have found out from them eventually, but what if they met real aliens? Something else?
I think there's stories to be told, but they need to know exactly what they want to do so they don't have the same problems as the last series did (even though I enjoyed it for the most part).

Interesting timing. I'm going through the Ron Moore series on DVD this month, and my daughter is watching it with me. She likes it a lot.
It seems late for a spinoff (10 years after the last series), and too early for a reboot (even though they say it's not).
10 years from now would have been better timing for a reboot, and 5 or 6 years ago would have made more sense for a spin-off. This makes no sense.

Esmail doing a spin-off of the reboot is a great idea IF he has a good angle on it. Caprica was a spin-off and didn't work - largely, I believe, because of the general rule of thumb that most prequels never work. So if this is some kind of "Young Adama" show, I'm not that interested.
