This sounds awesome. Good cast and I love anything that has to do with Japan and it's dark underworld. I guess I will have to subscribe to HBO Max now.
Ken Watanabe has boarded the “Tokyo Vice” drama series in the works at HBO Max.
He joins Ansel Elgort who was cast in the lead role back in June. Watanabe will executive produce the series along with John Lesher, Emily Gerson Saines, J.T. Rogers and Elgort.
The series is based on based on Jake Adelstein’s non-fiction book of the same name, which is a first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat. Elgort will star as Jake Adelstein, an American journalist who embeds himself into the Tokyo Vice police squad to reveal corruption. The series will chronicle Jake’s daily descent into the neon soaked underbelly of Tokyo, where nothing, and no one is truly what or who they seem.
Watanabe will play Hiroto Katagiri, a detective in the organized crime division of the Tokyo Police Department who is also a father-figure to Jake throughout the series as he helps guide him along the thin and often precarious line between the cops and the world of organized crime. The actor is best known for his feature roles in “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” “Inception,” and “The Last Samurai.”
The series has received a 10-episode order. J.T. Rogers will write the adaptation with Destin Daniel Cretton directing. Endeavor Content will serve as the studio.

Michael Mann will direct the Pilot and could direct more episodes. He will also be Executive Producer.
Great move by HBO Max.

Still in production. Some new Japanese actors cast. This is probably coming out sometime in 2022.
They are filming in Japan, so they have probably been hampered by COVID restrictions.

Tokyo Vice, after pausing production in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic, finally will land at HBO Max this spring. The series starring Ken Watanabe and Ansel Elgort hails from creator and writer J.T. Rogers. The series pilot was directed by Michael Mann.
The second official series order from HBO Max in 2019, Tokyo Vice is loosely inspired by American journalist Jake Adelstein’s nonfiction firsthand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat. The crime drama, filmed on location in Tokyo, captures Adelstein’s (Elgort) daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo in the late ‘90s, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem. The series will premiere with three episodes on Thursday, April 7, followed by two episodes airing every Thursday until the season finale on April 28.
Watanabe will play Hiroto Katagiri, a detective in the organized crime division of the Tokyo Police Department who is also a father-figure to Jake throughout the series as he helps guide him along the thin and often precarious line between the cops and the world of organized crime. The series also features Rachel Keller, Ella Rumpf, Rinko Kikuchi, Hideaki Ito, Show Kasamatsu, Tomohisa Yamashita, Shun Sugata, Masato Hagiwara, Ayumi Tanida and Kosuke Toyohara.
Rogers executive produces the series along with Michael Mann. Additional EPs are Adelstein, Elgort, Watanabe, Alan Poul, Emily Gerson Saines, Brad Kane, Destin Daniel Cretton, Kayo Washio and John Lesher.
Endeavor Content and Japanese pay-TV broadcaster WOWOW are producing for HBO Max.

That looks great. Reminds me a little of Black Rain.

I don't know the book, but the trailer definitely has a Black Rain vibe, which is one of my favorite movies and Michael Mann never disappoints (me).

I got the audio book that this series is based on and have started a listen. It's narrated by the author. It's a long listen. it's approximately 10 1/2 hours. I am through 45 minutes. Going to try to go through the book before the show starts in a few weeks.

Yeah, Black Rain, the series. Looks good and intense as usual coming from Mann. Gonna be bummed though if Takeshi Kitano isn’t somewhere in this.

Mann only directed the first episode. The kid that directed Shang Chi directed 9 episodes, and a lady named Hikari directed 2 episodes. According to IMDB.

Yeah Mann was only booked for the Pilot, but left it open to direct more. But he was scouting locations in Tokyo when the pandemic hit and production was delayed. He probably wasn’t available for more once he came back to finish shooting the Pilot.

This premieres on Thursday and I'm really excited for it. I've been listening to the Audible book on drives to work over the last week or so. I have about 3 hours left. The book is very detailed and graphic. It will be interesting to see how much this adaptation covers. But, the book also has really graphic depictions of the Tokyo red light scene covering prostitution and sex. The writer of the book participated in a lot of it. There are almost 2 chapters that cover it.

This is now up. 3 episodes are available.
I’m just about done listening to the audio book. It was a 10 1/2 hour listen. I have about 1 hour left. It’s an amazing book. Fascinating memoir about the Japanese police and the seedy criminal underworld.
and it looks like it’s a 10 episode season after all.

It’s super late and I only had time to watch half the first episode. It’s literally around 90% Japanese dialogue with subtitles, which is great and keeps it authentic. So far, it’s pretty close to the book. I’ll chime in more after I finish the episodes.

I dug the first episode. Not really the biggest fan of Elgort though.
Rachel Keller looks like she lost a ton of weight. I didn’t even recognize her from how she looked on Legion and Fargo.
