An unhappy ending would be finding out the algorithm was used to calculate love for someone else. Ultimately the real couple ends up together (or it's at least implied in the end).

It's all a matter of perspective, but if someone told you that your life was just a simulation for the "real" you, and that it was ending now, would you be happy about it?
You're right though, it's all a matter of perspective. That's why each episode affects people differently. |

I wouldn't call any of these endings "happy", but one source adequately termed SJ as "less pessimistic".

San Junipero was only decent for me.
White Bear is still my fav. I love metal head, and the dating app one too (can't remember the episode name). Also love the episode where everyone rates each other on their phones - so damn cringe worthy but so, so good. |

Even the so-called happy ending in San Junipero was a little bit chilling. The episode doesn't end with the couple living happily ever after. It ends with the image of a computer server, reminding you that they're not actually alive, they're just ones and zeros on a computer server.

Like I said, the episode is great until the end when it just turns to fan service. Truth be told even if Kelly didn't end up staying with Yorkie you still had a happy ending. Yorkie finally made her decision to stay in SJ because she got to experience the life that was taken from her. Kelly would have made the decision not to stay based off her marriage. Kelly's speech about why it was selfish and wrong for Yorkie to say those things about her decision were 100% correct. In no way would I believe that Kelly have made that choice in the end after spending, what, a month or so with Yorkie compared to 48 years with her husband and child, both who aren't in SJ. The proper and logical ending would have been both going their separate ways. The ending we got completely ruined the episode.
And, I do think the ending made perfect sense considering what led up to this & Kelly's miserable reality as a sick, elderly woman in a nursing home. My take on it was that Kelly stayed in the San Junipero "reality" not just because she wanted to stay with Yorkie, but also because it's where she was alive & vibrant. Like all of us (or I would say most of us), she was afraid to die, and "dying" in the normal way scared the hell out of her; yes, from one stand-point she wanted to see her husband/daughter, but from another she had fallen for Yorkie to some extent - and she had gotten used to the life in San Junipero. So, considering all of this - I completely get why she decided to stay in that reality, rather than choosing a "normal" death. I may be bringing a more personal take on this because the episode was definitely relatable to me due to the fact that I've had elderly relatives in nursing homes (now passed), and can understand how difficult an existence that is - i.e. being in such bad physical shape that you can't take care of yourself whatsoever, etc. So, having technology available to you where you can "escape" that disheartening existence by going into a fantasy world where you're young, healthy & vibrant AND where life is a never-ending party is extremely attractive. |

You are just wrong. And I know because Charlie Brooker says you are:
http://collider.com/black-mirror-han...harlie-brooker We did have a lot of torturous conversations about what’s really going on. We decided it’s a cloud-based system that’s simulating 1,000 different run-throughs of yourself and a potential partner to see how many times you’d rebel against it. As Hokeyboy said about a different simulation: "If consciousness is just electrical current and memory -- who's to say they aren't alive?" So we see a system that spawns and kills thousands of consciousness, just to get match statistics. |
Re: Black Mirror -- British anthology series -- Channel 4 / Netflix
I had been meaning to watch Black Mirror for awhile now, and finally got to it last month. Been knocking out the episodes through today, with my last one being the USS Callister one.
Metalhead has been my favorite episode out of all of them. Badass. Other episodes that stood out to me were Nosedive, Shut up and Dance (super uncomfortable though when it was revealed he was watching kiddie porn), Playtest, San Junipero, and White Bear. Good show, makes you think. Looking forward to future seasons. |
