https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...ce4c4ae0fd.jpg

On the all-new episode, "The Calm Before," the fair at the Kingdom is underway, with all four communities coming together in celebration for the first time in years, while some pacts are renewed, other deals will come at a much steeper price. The episode is written by Geraldine Inoa and Channing Powell and directed by Laura Belsey.

Episode 15 of 16

Strong episode tonight. Felt bad for them killing Tara and Enid but man I fucking cheered when they showed Henry's head. That fucker shouldn't have been in the show at all. What a waste of a character.

^Pretty much my thoughts.

My other thought was, now they know they're all in that canyon, it'd be good to attack them with some sort of napalm. :)

Oh well, a bunch of B level characters bit it. So happy that Henry is gone. They never should have killed off Carl.

Why is Scott Gimple still involved in this show at all?

Re: The Walking Dead (S9E15) -- "The Calm Before" -- 3/24/19

When they introduced the couple at the beginning of the episode, I knew it was simply because they couldn't spare any more A or even B tier characters to die
And then BLAMO! at the end.

It was actually a good and somewhat suspenseful episode - such a rarity.

I never watched Game of Thrones, but that reveal seemed to have a GOT vibe to it - both in amount of character deaths and heads on sticks seems like the kind of thing that show would do.

Sure, the characters aren't exactly upper tier - but Enid and Tara have been around a while (50 and 87 episodes respectively), and to a lesser extent Henry.
There just aren't many familiar characters left. If you were in more than 10 episodes of this show, you're a veteran now.
If Rick and/or Maggie come back, they're going to recognize like 4 people at this pace.

Pool Carol - lost another kid.

I wonder if the doctor's gonna feel survivor's remorse. Carl died saving him, and now everyone around him dies but him - including Carl's replacement.

Just how far away were they from the pit with the thousands of walkers? Because they'd have to be far away not to hear them.
I loved how we couldn't hear them until Daryl was about 10 yards away from the edge of the pit.

I don't reads the comics, but read somewhere that in the comics it's the King, Rosita, Father Gabe, & other characters I cant recall who were killed this way.
The Whisperers did this just to mark their territory?
Couldn't they just say "Hey, this is our territory, don't come into our territory & there won't be any problems."
Wasn't all the heads on sticks a little extreme?

Was watching it on my DVR and the recording cut off a half hour early ... came here to ask if anybody else had that problem and ... DAMN! I never thought I would be the guy to bitch about spoiler tags, but wow.

Rebrodcast is on now. I don’t want to stay up till 1am to catch the end, but I also don’t want to wait till tomorrow now.

You may not be aware, but the Whisperers aren't nice people.
It's partially revenge and partially a message/warning.

I could not be more delighted with the characters they chose to kill off. We were calling out the names of the characters each of us wanted dead and I am pretty sure I was the only one that went two-for-two.

Set fire to a nearby copse of trees and sip your favorite beverage while watching the horde stumble into the flames, except of course for those that are Whisperers who you then easily identify and pick off.

Sure, it is possible a few Whisperers will escape and if they are particularly enamored with stupid and futile gestures they may spend another year or so gathering up another horde and you may have to do it again. But after three or four such cycles I'm pretty sure even the densest Whisperer will start finding other ways to waste their time.

Same here. They had the first showing scheduled for an hour and the repeat at an hour and 25 minutes. I dvr'ed that showing to finish today.

So with Tara gone, we're down to six remaining pre-Alexandria characters unless Maggie, Rick, or Morgan return at some point: Daryl, Carol, Michonne, Rosita, Eugene, and Gabriel. Aaron could be included I suppose if you count any time before they actually get to Alexandria.

Kind of, yeah...

Spoiler:

In the comics it was mostly a bunch of bit players, but the big ones were Luke (musician from Magda’s group), Rosita, and Ezekiel. Gabriel wasn’t one of them, though. They sort of did a fakeout in the comics where you just see Rick’s reaction and some dreadlocks, so you think the last reveal is Michonne, but the next page reveals Ezekiel.

Speaking of the comics, I wonder if they’ll go in this direction... where a new power couple emerges...

Spoiler:
Cover to #156.

some might think this is a doozy...

The previews were kind of vague, but that whole journey north of the wall wasn’t in the comics, so I don’t know where they’re going with any of this. Eugene has the radio, though, so it looks like something might be happening with that next season.

I think the final scene of the season should probably be “Wait until Rick gets a look at you.” (Well, it won’t be Rick, I guess...)

Haha, they sure were teasing comic readers with Ezekiel. Looking back, I should've guessed he was safe. (I swear he even made a joke about coming out ahead.)

I suppose Alpha and Beta had contingency plans, but I feel like the character of Daryl would've easily disarmed Alpha, or just tackled her into the pit.

Who the heck leads Hilltop now. Sure wish they could've made Jesus happy.

I wonder if, in season ten, they won’t consolidate all of the characters into a single community. You can get away with having multiple communities in the comics, but the metrics of tv make it difficult to sustain a handful of lead characters spread out geographically. So everyone will move to whichever place doesn’t get ransacked by the giant Whisperer herd.

If Danai leaves, there isn’t anyone left in Alexandria to lead, save for Aaron or Negan, and there’s nobody left at Hilltop. There’s just Ezekiel and Carol.

If you narrow it down to when they were at the prison, we're down to Daryl, Carol and Michonne only. The last of the prison is seen in Season 4, Episode 10 - at which point we're introduced to Eugene, Rosita and Abraham (now dead) on the road at the end of the episode. So basically, outside of 3 characters - the rest of the cast goes back no further than S4E10.

I think Hilltop is no more. They can't anchor that community with the C-tier characters that are left there. Hell, after Maggie left and Jesus died - they barely had anyone important left as it was.

Bill Needle 03-25-19 02:36 PM

Re: The Walking Dead (S9E15) -- "The Calm Before" -- 3/24/19

I was a little bummed that Hank Williams Jr's rowdy friends bit it since they had a little originality to their group. But they - along with 4 of the other 7 victims - had accumulated about 20 total lines of dialogue in the show between all of them combined so it's impossible to feel any attachment to them despite the possibilities they presented of adding some freshness to the cast.

Enid...meh. I often have trouble remembering her name. She has been completely useless since Carl left, and mostly useless before. Tara defies explanation...someone suggested she only existed to make people not hate Andrea as much and I can't think of a better explanation. And Henry was quite simply an imbecilic menace...a threat to everyone he came in contact with (other than the enemy).

Since I doubt Tara and Henry were meant to come off this horribly it was a smart move by the show to eliminate characters they clearly have no idea how to present without looking foolish.

Finisher 03-25-19 03:41 PM

Re: The Walking Dead (S9E15) -- "The Calm Before" -- 3/24/19

Not sure what was more ridiculous: Tara assuming a position of leadership or Tara dirty bulking during the zombie apocalypse. Such a shitty actress, glad to see her go.

Enid was lowkey turning into a cutie but pretty worthless as a character.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...65734b543b.gif

I didn't like Henry but I think the past few episodes of fleshing him out as well as some of the others were necessary for this episode to have any meaning. I mean, I still don't really care but it did have a nice impact.

Did the hot redhead have any lines besides the one in this episode? That might be the only loss here.

I do have to say, it ended up being the most intriguing episode in literally years, enough to make me a little more interested in the show. I didn't delete it from my DVR, and I'm going to watch it again, this time giving it my full attention. For years now, it's been "background noise" while I make dinner, fold laundry, or play Asphalt 8 on my phone.

Re: The Walking Dead (S9E15) -- "The Calm Before" -- 3/24/19

^That is a big part of my problem ... I say I am going to watch it and by ten minutes in I’m reading DVDTalk or playing a game. As soon as this one started off with introducing another cannon-fodder couple, I was tuned out.

As far as ambition and what they were trying for, this episode was one of the better ones in quite some time. As far as execution, it was dreadful. It nailed EVERY bad Walking Dead Gimple trope with shameless aplomb.

Start episode with introduction intended to make you connect to random new characters ... check.
Kill random new characters for unknown reason that seems meaningful later ... check.
Filler, filler, filler ... check.
Have main characters espouse same tired morals ... check.
Oceanside ... check ... Wait, WHAT?! Oceanside!? Where the hell have they been?
Tease major battle/disaster/character death ... check.
Fail to deliver ... check.
Reveal major battle/disaster/character death happened off screen ... check.
Long, emotional camera pull ... check.
Time jump for next episode with no logical reason ... check.

I’ve never watched Game of Thrones, but I know what Red Wedding means ... and this, sir, was no Red Wedding. They really blew an opportunity with the Fair. While you may say Tara and Enid were B to C level characters, I liked them more than that. They were underused, yes. But to kill them off in this manner was just lazy. You can make off camera deaths work with real emotional power, look back to Sophia.

I know you guys are going to say I am hate watching, and maybe I am. I used to have a boss who said “If my managers are bitching it means they still care. When they stop bitching is when I get worried.”

I really hoped the new show runner would turn things around.

Well I watched, holly crap was it bad. Like posted above, same old non delivery, off screen kills. The producers must know everyone hates Tara and how useless she was and how bad an actress she was. Henry was, I assume meant to replace Carl which must have failed miserably if they killed him off too, and the other random people I don't know who they were. Jesus is dead? Huh, and they decided to keep the stupid priest? It's like hey let's keep the really bad actors and bad characters and kill off the good ones. Oh and if they killed off Carl and Henry, what's Lydia's purpose, did they even think about that?

Paff 03-26-19 10:17 AM

Re: The Walking Dead (S9E15) -- "The Calm Before" -- 3/24/19

^ Wow. Disagree with all of the above. And I'm NOT a blind defender of this show, as I've already mentioned I've not been paying as much attention to it as in years past.

First off, the off-screen kills was a brilliant decision, because it means we find out about them the same way the characters do. I did not know it was coming, hadn't read the comics, so when they found the piked heads I admit even I was taken back by it quite a bit. It was a gut punch, in a show that's been rather devoid of them for quite some time.

As for Lydia's "purpose", how about the fact that the rest of the characters will be living with someone they don't even particularly like, who's rather useless as you allude, but their decision to take her in cost the lives of several of their friends not to mention the adopted son of Ezekial and Carol? Even if they kick her back to the Whisperers, those folks are still gone. So her "purpose" is to dramatically affect the remaining characters.
