Judging by Caron’s tweet, this is a big undertaking.

I’m curious if they try to make these episodes 16:9 or keep it at 4:3. I know purists of 80s TV probably prefer the original aspect ratio.

Good lord He’s not dying of cancer. It’s a brain issue that affects his memory.

I mean, after decades of nothing on this show all of the sudden they give a shit about Moonlighting with all of the Willis news?

re: The MOONLIGHTING Discussion Thread (now available on streaming)

I remember the show being really big but only for a short time - mainly until the two characters finally hooked up, as mentioned. It burned very bright but then burned out. I was pretty young during its run, too, but I remember watching it with my family. My friends watched it. I remember it being really big. The friction between Willis and Shepherd was tabloid fodder. This all coincided with Die Hard and Willis making the leap to movie star.

I saw some episodes in syndication around 2000, and thought it didn't age well. Even the beloved "Atomic Shakespeare" ep wasn't as witty as I remembered. The 4th wall stuff was corny. I don't think David and Maddie even did much together the last couple seasons.

You said it.
You don't recall it being a phenomenon because you were too young. For two seasons 1985 to 1987, this was a must-see, must talk-about, TV sensation for adults "in the demo."

Never watched it but good for those that loved it. Something to look forward to since it looks like it'll be a while.

Could be a cash grab, especially considering his poor health.

Every article about Bruce mentions Moonlighting, so yes I am sure there is renewed interest.

Yeah, from what I remembered there were LOADS of 60s songs on this show ("Devil in a Blue Dress","Just my imagination", for example) I'm guessing the ones that Bruce covers (i.e., "Good Lovin'" on the Shakespeare episode) will be safe to keep. Plus the song is played in it's entirety. It would be impossible to replace that.

re: The MOONLIGHTING Discussion Thread (now available on streaming)

Yeah Moonlighting was kind of like Miami Vice. Not quite as big, but a similar trajectory. The first 2 seasons were huge and then it kind of fizzled out quickly, limping along agreeably but hardly inventively towards their eventual cancellation.

I loved Miami Vice every step of the way but there was nothing like Moonlighting at the time. Corny, perhaps, and assuredly dated by now, but for the mid 80s to late 80s, it was fairly groundbreaking for network TV. Very silly, very fourth wall breaking, very zany madcap fun.

Their problem was leaning far too much on the will-they won't-they dynamic between Shepherd and Willis. Few shows pull that off well. Cheers certainly succeeded beyond measure.

I think one season, maybe midway through the series, it was the season finale and the two leads were trapped by The Bad Guy and about to be shot. The Bad Guy says something along the lines of "Say your prayers, this is it!" and just as they were about to pull the trigger, an off-scene voice says, "Nope, sorry, season's over." The production assistant grabs the gun, someone yells cut, and you see the crew beginning to dismantle the set, while the actors (still in character) all look confused.

Very silly indeed. For 1986 or whatever.

Twin Peaks also fell into that trap. It's set up around this conceit of "Who killed Laura Palmer?" and once they answered that question too early, everybody tuned out and moved onto something else.

And this is where The X-Files fumbled the ball. There was always a sort of sexual tension between Mulder and Scully, but instead of "Will they or won't they?" everyone was like "Please don't." And they did. And they show went down the shitter.

That sort of makes me want to watch this series, at least until they bump the uglies.

I don't know whether revisiting some of this series' fondly remembered episodes will be great or disappointing.

"They really don't make them like they used to!" vs "How did I ever watch this?" is always a gamble.

I rewatched my DVD's last year, and thought it still held up very well.

Looking forward to seeing it in HD.

Now up on Hulu. This will be a 1st time watch for me as I never really paid attention to this show when I was 12.

The Pilot is 94 minutes. It's in 4:3.

Holy shit. I had forgotten how smoking hot Cybil Shepherd was back then. Her in that negligee
