The Affair (Showtime) -- Season 4 Thread -- Premieres 6/17/18
401
Original Air Date: Jun 17, 2018
Noah struggles to adjust to his new life after moving to Los Angeles to be closer to his kids. He attempts to reach a gifted but troubled student while under the stern eye of the school's principal. Helen finally discovers the source of her anxiety, only to be blindsided by a new catastrophe. Season premiere.
THE AFFAIR explores the emotional and psychological effects of an affair that destroyed two marriages, and the crime that brings these individuals back together. Season four finds Noah (West), Helen (Tierney), Alison (Wilson) and Cole (Jackson) in their own orbits, alienated from each other, spinning further and further away from where they all began. Every character is involved in a new relationship, forcing them each to decide if they're ready and willing to leave the past behind for good - a season about new beginnings, tragic ends and the ever-elusive possibility of forgiveness. Sanaa Lathan joins season four as Jenelle, the tough-as-nails principal of the charter school where Noah teaches. Ramon Rodriguez stars as Ben, a Marine veteran now employed by the VHA and Alison's new love interest. Additional season four guest stars include Russell Hornsby, Christopher Meyer, Amy Irving and Phoebe Tonkin.

I forget how every character on this show is a raging asshole.
Feels like they're just treading the same ground over and over.

I just saw Maura Tierney signed on for a new show. Maybe this is finally going to end?
I haven't watched the premiere yet.

I still find this show incredibly well done. The alternate viewpoints still continue to fascinate me, how two people see the same scenarios in completely different ways. So far (2 eps in) there has been less ahole behavior than normal, like how Cole sees Allison's skipping the meetings as total jerk behavior but she actually had good reason.

Showtime announced Thursday that it has renewed the relationship drama for a fifth and final season, to tentatively bow next summer. The Affair is currently airing its fourth season, with the finale scheduled for Aug. 19.

OMFG!!!!!! This is the best show!
I told my wife that I can watch a full 5th season of the 3 guys solving mysteries a la Scooby Doo.
I still can't believe they did that.

I was waiting for Noah to shake his head. And that was some great stuff from Pacey Witter in this episode. Very well done. I need about 5 episodes next season of just the Anton, Noah and Cole road trip.

Wonder why Ruth Wilson wanted off the show.
Though her character is the least interesting lead character on the show.

Is it too far fetched to think she was missing a kidney when she drowned? Her dad didn't seem to worried about her whereabouts before the call came in. If he needed her to survive, wouldn't he have been a little more concerned?

That's what I kept thinking when they kept talking about "Ben" being involved. I forgot that was the name of the ex-boyfriend. I never assumed he would have involvement. I thought Cole was talking about the father being involved.

Yeah, that was unsatisfying. I hope Ben get found out/caught somehow. But that was a weak episode, and unfortunate to be Wilson's last. Do we know why she wanted to bail on the show?

In regards to leaving the show, this may be the reason...
The official reason behind Wilson’s departure from the show is unclear. However, she complained about pay parity on the show during an interview with Radio Times in February.
“I definitely get less money than a male in my situation would. Definitely,” Wilson said. “He definitely gets more than me. I mean, I don’t know what the figure is, but I’m sure he does.”
The actor hasn’t spoken with West about the pay difference. “It’s quite hard to bring that up in a way," she said. "But it needs to be an open discussion and men need to help us out.”

Yeah, like an idealized version of what she would've preferred to what the reality was.
Though Ben was still pretty creepy in her idealized day-dream.
But yeah, he had no intention of leaving his wife - and she seemed super happy/oblivious when she was decorating his office - a wife on the edge of a divorce would not be doing that and behaving that way.

I liked the episode. I didn't notice, until I read a review, that it was only the two actors the whole episode.
The first part was daydreaming, but I will hold to confirm that the last part of the second half is real. That Ben killed her. Did they mention in the morgue about the hit in the head? And I think he would need a boat to throw away her body. Otherwise the body would show up earlier. And of course he spent at least an hour in that. Not sure if that would match with his alibi.
I know she's dead, but I was expecting Ruth Wilson to somehow be part of the final season. I mean this was Alison and Noah's show.
