Krypton (S1E01) -- Superman Prequel -- "Pilot" -- 3/21/18

"Set two generations before the destruction of Superman’s home planet, KRYPTON follows Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), the legendary Man of Steel’s grandfather — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed. With Krypton’s leadership in disarray, Seg-El encounters Earthly time-traveler Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) who warns he’s under the clock to save his beloved world from chaos. Fighting to redeem his family’s honor and protect the ones he loves, Seg is also faced with a life and death conflict – save his home planet or let it be destroyed in order to restore the fate of his future grandson.

10 episode 1st season.

This premieres tomorrow night on SyFy for those unaware it exists.

It's a prequel to Superman that takes place 200 years before it.

Going to try to do this as a weekly episode thread as opposed to season since it's a Superman themed show and this kind of drama gets more attention then others.

David S. Goyer co-created this series and is EP.

Damian Kindler, who worked on Stargate SG-1, Sanctuary, Sleepy Hollow and Stargate Atlantis, is the showrunner.

Quick, name a prequel that was superior to the original source material!

Rise, Dawn, War Apes trilogy.

Hannibal TV series.

But in regards to this... I have no interest in the slightest.

For some reason they've taken design elements from Man of Steel. I really don't trust Goyer to guide this series.

If you have seen the making-of preview that has already aired, you realize the entire cast is practically British.

I thought it was good.
Liked the look of Brainiac.

Was a short episode. The last 15 minutes was a rehash of the preview that aired last week.

Kind of interested but Goyer being co-creator makes my interest go down.

I recorded it and was surprised it was on the Syfy channel as I thought it was a CW show and was simply a bonus airing on the Syfy channel. I will watch it this weekend.

Re: Krypton (S1E01) -- Superman Prequel -- "Pilot" -- 3/21/18

I liked it. After getting through some of the political stuff, it seems to have an interesting new take on the Superman lore. Rather than being a straight up prequel, they’re incorporating how this will affect Superman’s future.

The look and sets didn’t feel cheap.

I wonder how often this time traveler will appear and if he will give updates on what’s happening with Kal-El.

The look of Brainiac is interesting. Didn’t realize he has that much back story going back 200 cycles as they call it here.

So my only question now is General Zod’s ancestors are black?

My only issue is that I felt Cameron Cuffe portrayed Seg-El as a little too British, especially the accent and slangs.

And yeah the episode was short. It finished around the 45-47 minute mark. After that they played a Nightflyers EPK and a portion of the Making Of Krypton special from last week.

The show looks cool as hell. Jury's still out with me as to whether story will be any good.

Adam Strange (time traveler) travels along a Zeta beam. Don't know what his current character is like but in older comics he is a scientist. He discovered the Zeta beam and is able to calculate where and when it will strike Earth. If he is where the beam strikes he is transported to somewhere else in space. After awhile the beam wears off and he bounces back to Earth.
I only know of the beam that takes him to planet Rann with no time travel. There may be multiple beams and one transports him to Krypton's past.
I hope he keeps popping up. He will have to wait until the next time the beam hits Earth and will always get yanked back before he finishes what he came to do.

The commercial breaks were shorter leaving extra time at the end. Probably still clocks in at 40-43 minutes of other current shows.
The episode runs 44 minutes. The standard is six commercial breaks totaling 18 minutes. Krypton had three 2 minutes breaks for a total of 6 minutes.

The 1st Ape movie is still the best in regards to the dreadful feeling that something wasn't right and the twist. The prequels were good but it was not better than the first, IMO. I still wish they would do the original story from the novel. It was much more interesting.

It was OK. They definitely put money into it. Not sure I want s political Superman prequel though.

I liked it - as has been said, they seemed to put money into it.

A couple of specific though hardly important thoughts about the episode:

Spoiler:
I thought playing the original Superman (1977) movie theme when they got to the Fortress of Solitude was a nice touch. The opening sort of reminded me of Jor El's talking to baby Kal as he rockets toward earth from that same movie.

Is this a "canon" part of the DCEU, or a separate thing like Gotham.

I was afraid it would be too soapy but it actually turned out pretty well.
I'm giving it a solid "B" and am looking forward to the next episode.

Re: Krypton (S1E01) -- Superman Prequel -- "Pilot" -- 3/21/18

If you have seen the circulating shots of Brainiac, the show's designers did a great job on his design. They ripped off how he looked in the Brainiac arc from about a decade ago in the comics. The designers did a great job translating his look on the page to the screen.

The only negative thing about Brainiac in this television show tells me the movie division has zero interest using him in a movie. Which I still don't understand. Superman has now had movie after movie with the same villains, Lex Luthor and Zod. Why does Batman get a new villain each movie, while Superman is forced to suffer facing the same characters?

I will hold judgment on this show for a few episodes. It appears to be a sci-fi adventure series with the hero against an authoritarian government.

I did enjoy how they paid homage to John Williams' score in a couple of scenes. This was all I was looking for in Man of Steel or Batman v Superman. But no, they had to pretend it never existed in the movie universe.

Batman '66 - Joker, Catwoman, The Riddler, The Penguin

Batman '89 - Joker

Batman Returns - Catwoman , The Penguin

Batman Forever - The Riddler

The Dark Knight - Joker

The Dark Knight Rises - Catwoman

And there is movie Flash and TV Flash as well as movie Superman and TV Superman. So its not out of the realm of possibility that Brainiac to make a movie appearance.

Krypton establishes how deep the connection is between Superman and Brainiac.

You kinda shot yourself in foot with that reference. That Batman rogue’s gallery seems pretty redundant. I would add Bane and Ra’s Al Ghul at least. At least Superman had Neutron Man...

I was responding to a poster who said Superman's movie villians were redundant while Batman's were not...
