David Ogden Stiers dead @75 from bladder cancer

M*A*S*H is my all time favorite show. This one stings.

RIP Major Winchester.

Re: David Ogden Stiers dead @75 from bladder cancer

I didn't see him in a lot of roles outside MASH, but I remember finding it interesting that he didn't actually have that Boston accent he used on the show, and it was weird at first hearing him without it. I can only recall him in three things, and all three were memorable: MASH, ST:TNG, and Creator (with Peter O'Toole).

RIP

At least he didn't have to commit ritual suicide ten years ago.

Interesting tidbit I learned from the AV Club article is that he stayed in the closet until his late 60's because he didn't want it to affect his relationship with Disney since he was a voice actor in a ton of their movies.

Really? Didn’t know that ...

I grew up watching MASH as it was my mom’s favorite show. Loved his Disney voice work.

RIP

The first time I saw him outside of MASH was in Better Off Dead - and was surprised that he didn't have an accent. Then afterwards I saw him pop up on older shows (ie. Mary Tyler Moore, etc).

5 major characters from the show gone now... 6 left (Hawkeye, Hotlips, Radar, Klinger, BJ and Trapper)

I also preferred Winchester ove Burns, and he did so much incredible voice work.

When he joined MASH, I was glad that he wasn't a clone of Burns, and quickly became a fan of the Winchester character. Sorry to hear about this.

Rest in peace, Charles.

Trapper, aka Wayne Rogers, died about a year ago.

I really enjoyed his guest appearance on Frasier. My two favorite blowhard doctors together. Except his character was completely different from Winchester. But it was still a great episode, with Martin thinking his character was the real father of Frasier and Niles.

He was also in the Dead Zone TV series. This'll be a double ouch for my wife, as she's a big fan of that and M*A*S*H.

He was great on Dead Zone and Stargate Atlantis. I'll have to check out some of his other work someday.

Re: David Ogden Stiers dead @75 from bladder cancer

I absolutely LOVE David Ogden Stiers' performances on M*A*S*H*.

He came in and elevated the show. He was so much better than Larry Linville (who, to be fair, never got the chance to do anything but the one trick pony they forced upon him). Winchester was a great character who had tremendous depth. Just when you hated the guy and thought he was going to be predictable (like Frank Burns had been) he did something thoughtful or caring. And Stiers was able to play the part so well that it didn't seem like acting - he seemed like a real person, no matter what they had him doing or saying.

Every time they replaced a character on the show it was an improvement. None moreso than when Winchester replaced Burns, and a big part of the reason why was because of the performances by David Ogden Stiers.

He was also great on Star Trek TNG, Stargate Atlantis, and, of course, Better Off Dead.

He will be missed.

Yeah, Winchester was such a great character. He was arrogant and snobby, where you instinctively want to dislike him, but he was a good and decent person under the surface.

Re: David Ogden Stiers dead @75 from bladder cancer

Like the Christmas episode where he secretly gave sweets to the kids and Klinger learned about it. Or the episode with the stuttering soldier, turned out his sister Honoria had the same problem.

I heard Stiers resented the character and the show and would never talk about it in interviews. Anyone know if this is the case?

Talking about great Winchester episodes, his role in the finale was heartbreaking. The bits with the North Korean musicians. Another example of M*A*S*H at its most cruel.
