Just saw this. I was a MASH fiend growing up. What a great and nuanced character he played.

RIP CEW, III.

I was bummed to hear this. I grew up on MASH and found Winchester to be one of my fave characters. I also enjoyed his voice work. One of my other fave roles for him was the Mayor of the small town in Doc Hollywood.

They were Chinese. And yeah, that one exchange, when BJ was returned to the camp after a near discharge and Potter was bringing him up to speed on events since he was gone was the one good laugh in the entire finale.

Winchester: No, no, dolce! Dolce!

Potter: The Chinese are torturing Winchester.

I didn't even like MASH until they added Winchester. And of course he was the voice for so many great Disney characters.

I forgot all about his role in Better Off Dead! That aardvark hoodie was a ROTFLMAO for me back then. Still brings a bittersweet smile to my heart thinking about it.

The last thing I recall seeing him on was Rizzoli and Isles on TNT. He played Sasha Alexander's adoptive father.

He's been around for ages and had a long career. Didn't realize he had fallen ill recently.

Ah, of course. I remembered them surrendering to Charles, so I thought they were North Koreans.

Winchester was an awesome addition to MASH. Stiers was a great actor and class act.

He narrated lots of PBS shows too. He'll definitely be missed.

I just rewatched Doc Hollywood maybe 2-3 weeks back and he was fantastic in that film. I have seen probably every episode but the finale of MASH at least 2-12 times each so this is sad news but his legacy lives on.

I have noticed his voice over work over the years but will now pay extra attention to it.

Like him on the PERRY MASON tv movies as the DA that always loses the case.
Voiced SOLOVAR on JLU and the PENGUIN on "Mystery of the Batwoman" movie.

Rest In Peace!

He was a great comedic actor. Of course I loved him on M*A*S*H, but a great role I haven't seen mentioned is the first season of Two Guys and a Girl, back when it was Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place. Stiers played a regular customer at the pizza place who would always have stories about his life that turned out to be plots from movies. It had the potential to be a very one-note character, but Stiers made the gag fresh and funny every time they used it.

I've been streaming Fraser on Netflix and got to an episode with Stiers guest-starring as an old family friend (co-worker with Fraser's deceased mother). He was brilliant in the role and it was probably the best episode of the tenth season.

That's right! I remember that ep. Wasn't the character gay as part of the plot as well?

Yes. Martin expressed concern over the relationship Stiers' character had with his wife, at which point Stiers indicated he was gay. It's funny, I was just thinking of that episode the other day, for some reason.
