If Troye looks familiar, he played the young James Howlett (a young Wolverine) in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

This is going to suck. Chastain looks good and can act, but she has no star power or charisma to bring to the show or inspire any sketches. $10 says she "shows off her lighter side" with a musical monologue.

She has incredible charisma what are you talking about? Have you ever seen her on a talk show she's fantastic.

Her name is hot too.

Will SNL have the same amount of episodes this season with the Winter Olympics or will they have less two or three week breaks in March-May?

I saw Molly's Game last night and it was definitely weaker due to the lack of a movie star in the lead role.

That's incorrect.

She was strong as the lead and the movie was good because of her.

Anyway, I try to watch SNL but this season might be the first time I just don't care anymore.

There's no one on this show that matters. Maybe only the news segment but man it's just so bland and unimportant.

To be honest, I haven't watch a full episode of SNL in a few years... I feel an obligation to continue these threads out of sheer duty.

I do however watch specific clips from that week if they sound funny or pop up in my Facebook feed.

Label me a heretic if you must. ;)

My opinion is incorrect. Please also explain to me why my favorite flavor of ice cream sucks.

We need to know your favorite flavor of ice cream first.

Why does it matter if the lead role is played be a "movie star"?

Chastain is a great actress and has a great onscreen persona. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean it'll translate well to SNL - a live performance of comedic skits is a totally different beast than acting in films.

You prefer Gal Gadot instead somebody with limited talent?

Chastain is a movie star now with all the movies she made since 2011.

While the episode was hit and miss, Chastain was great.
She had a lot of energy, didn't have her eyes glued to the teleprompter and had excellent delivery of her lines. And it doesn't hurt that she's nice to look at too.

Need more hosts like her.

EDIT: Never heard of the musical guest, but I thought he was brutal - especially the first song.

Prediction correct

She is literally a person who stars in movies, but she is not a "movie star."

Yeah, she seemed like she was actually excited to be hosting.

A movie star, by virtue of their charisma and the enormity of their persona, draws a viewer into their character's story and immediately places the viewer on their side. An actor's star quality adds a compelling aspect to the movie-watching experience that goes beyond what is literally being presented on the screen. This is especially valuable when your movie has the lead in every scene, and doing voice-over, and the scenes are dialogue-heavy.

If anything, I have the opposite opinion. Someone who's a "star" I usually find doesn't melt into the role their playing. This is why I have issues watching films with Tom Hanks for example - because when I'm watching the film, I feel like I'm not watching the character - I'm watching the actor instead.

I prefer a character actor even in the lead role. I find they don't bring that star baggage with them to the role.

And back to your earlier point. Jessica Chastain is a wonderful actress and can play the lead as well as a supporting character with the best of them.

If there’s one thing I can say about this episode, it’s that it inspired a truly pointless argument about who is/isn’t a movie star.

I actually liked the episode. Well I liked it before I read this thread and realized she isn't a movie star. But I thought the skits were more hit than miss for once.

The ep was ok. Didn't hate it. and yeah, Chastain did a great job.

They should get more CHARACTER ACTORS to host this show....:p

Re: SNL (S43E11) -- 01/20/17 -- H: Jessica Chastain -- MG: Troye Sivan

That gameshow one was pretty good, down to the meta references and Keenan being in character. The best was the final question, "write down things that you think would matter."

That Fresh Prince bit was pretty funny as well.

Michael Corvin 01-22-18 01:40 PM

Re: SNL (S43E11) -- 01/20/17 -- H: Jessica Chastain -- MG: Troye Sivan

Like all SNL skits the, Fresh Prince one went on way to long. Whatever funny, original idea they had in the first couple verses was ruined by the following four.

And that musical act was fucking terrible.

Rob V 01-23-18 06:35 AM

Re: SNL (S43E11) -- 01/20/17 -- H: Jessica Chastain -- MG: Troye Sivan

I thought the Fresh Prince thing was the highlight... a little long, but the payoff was great.

fujishig 01-23-18 08:48 AM

Re: SNL (S43E11) -- 01/20/17 -- H: Jessica Chastain -- MG: Troye Sivan

Yeah, it was long, but unlike 90% of their skits it had an actual ending, so I'll forgive it.
