Re: The X-Files (S11E01) -- Season Premiere -- "My Struggle III" -- 1/3/18

I just rewatched it before deleting it just to make sure I'm not just getting grouchy in my old age.

....nope, it was still horrid.

I did notice one thing I missed last night. During the opening credits sequence just before ending when it typically flashes to one of of the show's popular slogans, i.e 'Trust No one', 'The Truth is Out There'...this time it read 'I Want To Believe'. Only this time the letters all dropped off leaving it to say 'I Want To Lie'.

At first I thought it was a clever 'easter egg' that the genius Chris Carter had hidden but then I realized this was his way of telling us all along that he had been lying to us for the past 12 years about knowing what he was doing.

oh well, here's hoping they don't sacrifice anymore lambs from our childhood memories in search for television ratings. Roseanne can't be any worse than this....

When the guy came into Scully's hospital room to kill her I half expected his face to change to that shape shifter guy. He's long dead isn't he?
I seem to remember an old episode to do with some mineral or element that could kill them and a stone quarry of the mineral.

The shapeshifters were actually the gray aliens. Being aliens, they apparently though giant Brian Thompson was somehow an inconspicuous human form to adopt which is why they favored that appearance.

The super soldiers were the ones that were vulnerable to magnetite -- in fact it was the only thing that could apparently kill them.

You must not watch NFL games on Fox...

From DC to South Carolina down country roads without the guy noticing. I guess I have to handwave it away as Cancer Man's Rival wanted Mulder to find him.

I saw him at a PTA type meeting around 2000. I was taken aback. The joys of living in LA

There's NFL on Fox? I thought those were long commercials interrupted by a game. Who knew?

Thank you all for watching that show so I didn't have to. A medal of honor to bluesix for watching it twice, just to be sure.

I forgot, how did CSM heal from those burns? Or was it "aliens did it?"

With all of this shit about CSM being Fox's father, Fox sleeping with Scully, Scully getting pregnant, and CSM cucking Fox Mulder, The X-Files turned into a bad soap opera.

Oh my god this was bad on so many different levels. I think I will just bail now and cut my losses. I plan on re-watching the first nine seasons after the Oscar Challenge is over. I think I can retcon this episode and season 10 from my memory. I agree that CSM is likely lying through his teeth about William but to even put that story out there is just gross.

The only thing that would have made the episode worse would have been the inclusion of a super soldier.

Yes, did he do it by artificial insemination or did he climb on top of her during one of the times Scully was blacked out and abducted.

Maybe Scully kills herself when she finds out and that's the real reason why Gillian Anderson is not coming back.

There was plenty of ads for the this if you watch football on Fox. Seemed like every time out promised at one plug for the show.

And I WAS pumped for the X-Files to come back. Hopefully the one-offs are better than this continuance of the Mythology story.

Then they'll introduce time travel and we'll find out that William goes back in time and becomes CSM creating an infinite loop.

I want neither of those images in my brain. The episode tells us that all this happened during the road trip Scully and CSM took during the S7 episode "En Ami" (again, unreliable narrator but this is what we have). In an interview with EW Carter was adamant that Scully wasn't raped. Pretty much everyone is trying tell him "dude, no matter how CSM did it, this fits the federal definition of rape." There's no way to sugar coat this turd.

Same here. And I drink my morning coffee out of an 'I Want To Believe' mug I picked up at a con a million years ago.

I loved this show (previously) SO much, even in all of its convoluted, impossible-to-follow main story arcs.

This. This episode was comically terrible, from the acting, to the dialogue, to EVERYFUCKINGTHING. Ok, except CSM - William B. Davis is still awesome.
All else: HORRIBLE.

Will I watch the rest of this season?
Damn straight, Skippy....

Yeah, even reliable actors knew the script was so bad, they didn't even try to save it, and pretty much sleep-walked through the episode.

What an awful premiere - Duchovney looks bloated and tired, as if he's drinking his way through the shoot. Gillian Anderson is slowly transforming into Rocky Dennis. Everyone seems to have lost the thread of this show, from the terrible writing, poor direction and bored actors. I think I'm going to flashback to Fridays in the 90's, when my wife and I would plant ourselves in front of our 19 inch Emerson tv and forget this reboot ever happened.

Alan Sepinwall (TV critic) saw the first 5 episodes. He said that indeed My Struggle III was awful. But he said from what he’s seen so far that in his opinion it’s a better season. The upcoming James Wong and Darin Morgan episodes are good. Only thing though it’s a little more serialized than last season and even the standalones have some tie in to the overall season plot.

If they're going that route, they need retcon back to season six or seven.

That's what I'm doing: I think everything in The X-Files since early Season Seven is just a horrible nightmare that really didn't happen
